CDR23: Replace speakers & keep Bose amp? Budget audio install in 996?

The following thread has me motivated to try the same in the 996:
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...o-install.html

Has anyone done a similar install?

I am very reluctant to pull out the stock headunit and tear into the car to run wiring for amps, etc. I don't have a need for navi or bluetooth.

What I'm thinking:
  • 4 1/4 inch 2 way components for the dash
  • 6 1/2 inch coax woofers in the doors
  • 4 1/4 inch 2 way components for the rear panels
  • something to replace the woofers in the Bose rear shelf sub

I'm looking at the Morel Tempo and Maximo lines, Helix, as well as options from Focal. I would prefer to keep each speaker set under $200.

Does anyone have advice, or know what size/depth speakers might just drop in without too much effort?

I like the Jenhert option, but they seem really expensive.

thanks

does your bose amp is optical? dont think so, so you can use any other amp with new speakers, it more real and interesting than to find 1-2ohm speakers that suit bose amp

I don't mind using 4 ohm speakers. Load will increase, power will decrease, but sound quality should go up and I'm sure the morel and other brands are far better than my 10 year old bose speakers.

I have Focal speakers in my C4S and they are great. They were a huge improvement over the stock Bose speakers.

Did they drop in without too much fuss? I assume that's the Focal 100CVX?

thanks

Dash and rear speakers dropped in easily. Custom mounts were built for the subs in the doors and behind the rear seat.

Thanks for the pics. Very helpful.

Guess I can't go wrong with Focal or Morel...I'll just get whatever is the better deal.

I'm not familiar with Morel, but I do believe that the speakers are the weakest link in the stock Bose system. It's not that they sound bad, but upgrading them really does make a big difference. I also upgraded my amp and head unit, but that's not necessary to improve sound quality. I did it because I wanted modern navigation, bluetooth, Sirius XM, Pandora, etc.

I can't bring myself to tear into the car for an amp and wiring. I also feel like a more modern HU wouldn't match well with the car's style...not to mention I'm usually listening to the motor

Any idea what the maximum mounting depth might be in the doors? Also, did you have room for crossovers in the dash?

Just purchased a bunch of stuff from CDT directly. They have really good pricing on "B" stock and speakers with scratched baskets.

Put together 2 sets of the ES-4 4" mid with 1" tweeters and crossovers, ES-5 5.25 midbass drivers for the doors I'm going to try and fit into the bose baffles, and I'm going to try and shove two of their ES-6MSUB 6.5" subwoofers into the bose sub in the back.

They even have a few 2-ohm options for anyone looking to match the bose amplifier's output, but I stuck to 4 ohm stuff.
