Purchase of 2001 996 Porsche
I am contemplating the purchase of a 2001 Porsche Carrera, mileage 34,000 miles. Previously had an engine failure at 30,000 miles due to IMS failure. Engine rebuild performed by Boston Sports Car; at time of rebuild IMS replaced with updated Porsche part, RMS also replace but clutch was not replaced cost of rebuild was $12,000.Selling price is $27,500, it is a one owner car with all documentation. Car is mint in all other aspects. Will have a PPI performed. Does this sound like a good car to purchase or should I stay away. Will the maintenance cost be very high?
Thanks

The price seems high to me. Back in 2010 I bought a 2002 (Generation 996) with 16k miles for $32k. I imagine today you can easily get in to a 2002+ model for upper 20s. Another lesson I learned is to trade a little bit more mileage for more content. A base 996 is a $75k car new, however a full optioned C4S was probably a $100k car. When used the gap is smaller. I'd first learn everything you can about the options available and then do your search. You can probably save money in a cold climate area once fall/winter hits unless you are in a hurry.

I would check out some others for comparison sake. This is one around here: 22K
Cherry clean adult owned AWD convertible. New top, tires, liner. Porsche certified and maintained. This is my once in awhile car, we just bought a house and This needs to go. No dents, no tears and a clean car fax! Original manuals and equipment all there. Always garaged indoors. Paint is immaculate no swirls or marks at all. No after market equipment. 6 speed, fun
But there are others from 34k to 37k so yours seems like it's in the ball park.
Having a rebuilt engine is not an indication of future maintenance issues unless the rebuild was not done correctly.
FWIW, I'd look around before committing and be sure to get a good PPI.

Too high. Max for mk1 should be $23k and $25k if it has aero, regardless of mileage. It's all the lower mileage examples that run into issues anyways. My $.02

Head over to the jersey side or keep an eye out here. I watched several inventories like the stock market. Mine was 30k including an extended warranty. And be ready to negotiate if PPI, features, etc are to your liking.

First let me thank everyone who took the time to answer an old car crazy guy. Automobiles have been a great part of my life, I eat drink and breath cars. I am new to Porsche cars and eager to learn what ever knowledge you can share with me. Attached you will find some photo's of the Porsche Carrera under consideration. Thanks again.

^^^This!! I can't tell you how many questions I had related to historical mods and maintenance with prior owners. For my recent purchase, owner #2 and #3 are a text message away (#1 was a 1 yr lease guy)... and have quickly become good friends. Transparency is great- you know what you're in for and being new to Pcar world, can learn a lot from.

Amazing deal. I wouldn't think twice!
These cars are bullet-proof and the 99-01's are most in demand!
