Scrape or Spray
#18
When I lived/drove in areas where frost or worse was possible I've always used a scraper with the engine idling and the defroster on full blast.
Any deicer is messy and as wise poster mentioned could damage the paint or the glass rubber, etc.
Also, one has to keep tons of this stuff around and that's a pain. The scraper just lays on the back seat floor or it is stored in the front trunk.
In cold weather I let the engine idle until the secondary air injection pump shuts off and the engine RPMs drop and the engine is idling smooth and of course until the glass, all glass is clear enough to safely proceed.
It has been my experience the engine is more tractable once is has warmed up some from this idling. Really, it doesn't take very long usually the hold up is how much work it takes to clear the glass of ice/snow.
