Trouble getting shift linkage onto gear shift ball end

Hey all. One of my shift cables broke at the transmission side.

I ordered a replacement part that is very close to being installed, except that this new 996 cable has a different ball end and I can't get it to snap onto the gear selector ball end. Any advice appreciated!

Here is a photo of the 2 old ball ends and here is the new cable ready to be installed.

The original set seem to be much deeper and snap on the gear selector ball end with no problems. But these new cables are porsche oem, so it shouldn't be a problem.
