LOL - thanks man, yeah I was fairly paranoid about it after the install which is why I fabricated the "stealth cover" - The previous week some a-hole did a smash-n-grab on our X3, took the TomTom GPS right off the dash- middle of an open busy street no less...

I just picked up a 8120 to install in my 02 996 Cab. I was a bit nervous about cutting into the OEM mounts until I saw this thread. Thanks for sharing your work. I plan on moving the AC controls to the upper section of the lower pod and keeping the shelf below it.
Over the last 2 days, I've mounted the gps antenna in front of the cabin sensor and run the mic to the rear view mirror. Do you think the antenna will interfere with the cabin sensor in this position?
Next step is to move the ac controls, then mount the unit.
cabin sensor- where do you mean? Typically the gps antenna should go under the cap for the alarm light. It's a very easy spot to mount, you just need to be careful popping off the cover. use a cloth on dash and tape-wrapped thin screwdriver to pop it up from the edge facing you.
No matter where you mount that mic, don't expect the audio to be very good. the hands-free on most of the kenwood in-dash units is not so hot. I think the remedy is to find a better quality mic. Good luck and post some pics!

By cabin sensor, I meant alarm light. Hmmm...I completely missed the part about mounting it under the cover. I put it in front of it. I'll have to move it. Grrr...now I'll have a little cable access hole on the front of the cover.
hmm- I guess you could pick up another cover from Sunset Porche, shouldn't be that expensive. After you pull the cover off, pull up the alarm light and plug and dremel a cable pathway notch in the plastic next to the square dash opening for the alarm light plug.
Look in the very first post of this thread for pics of mounting the gps antenna.
Pull the cable for the gps antenna through the square hole and out behind the head unit. The gps magnet-mounts on the little platform area in front of the alarm light. pop alarm light back in with the gps cable next to it in the notched out area. put cover back on and that's it.

Did you run a backup camera? I'm trying to figure out the best way to run the wires. It looks like I'll have to drill through the bumper and snake it around the engine compartment.
As a follow up, I pulled the bumper and found an access hole behind the license plate holder. I was able to route the wires through it and the engine compartment, along the rear passenger panel and to the center console tunnel. There is an access hole between the engine compartment and passenger area where the main harness goes through. I'll post pics of the final later today.
I have a question, does a 02 Carrera 2 use a fibre optic harness or just the regular ones?

has anyone installed this in an 01 wihthout the cupholder ? i assume you just make the perimeter trim piece shorter rather than it having to cover where the cupholder used to be
