i think i want the kenwood but am still a little undecided

I'm happy with mine (the 7140) overall, though I'm a bit annoyed that the handsfree bluetooth stuff isn't 100% with my phone (T-Mobile G1), and when I connect the phone via USB, it locks up the whole satnav system. Works fine with my older phones.

Oh well, can't win them all I guess.

i have an earpiece so i wont be using the bluetooth, my main/ concern is ease of use and the looks of the nav screen

Go play with one in a store. That's what I did.

Overall, I like the Garmin interface a lot. It certainly is easier to enter street names with an on-screen keyboard instead of the silly knob my S4's satnav had. The map screen is a little more cluttered than I'd want too, but that's a minor thing. The screen is very easy to read, and the voice directions are very good, the best I've used so far.

I do wish it had a knob for volume, and some physical buttons for track previous/next, those are a bit tricky to use while driving, if you want to keep your eyes on the road.

When I installed mine there was a 1/2" gap at the top. I had a carbon fiber company make me a filler piece which looks great

What - 2k??? Is that just for installing the head unit only on your 01 TT?? Shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred tops, this is one of the easiest hookups / installs ever (I used to own a car audio shop). Any added labor expense would be in the custom fabrication of a nice faceplate / surround, but that is not too difficult either.

Mine was like that too initially. Basically you need to spilt the difference on the gap by shimming the head unit so it is centered vertically. Should end up with a 1/4" gap on top / bottom. Or, shim it all the way up and have the 1/2" gap on the bottom (less noticeable). I centered mine.

moving climate controls, making a plate to cover the gap, said they use mdf and paint it, said they need 16 hours ! this shop won awards so i wasnt expecting cheap but they also want to charge 1900 for a kenwood dnx 9140

I would definitely shop around on install price, I'm doubly surprided they would bend you over that much on the install if you bought the 9140 from them.

16 hours?? An installer should be able to do it in half that. Once you have everything apart (which is not that tough), it literally takes 10 mins to move the AC control. It is designed to be moved by Porsche so there is no drama there. You could save some cash by doing the install yourself and then take it to a shop for the face plate (which just double-sticks on with 3m tape, does not require you to remove head unit).

You can do the install on a saturday easy enough, give yourself 6 hours. I ay 6 hours becuase you've never done it before. A dremel tool will help make things go faster for cutting the factory mounting cage to accept the double din chassis.

MDF is pretty thick- i'm not seeiing how that would work. Typically for this car you will use ABS plastic and some paint, or, if you want to get trick do an overlay in CF or leather.
