Marty - I currently run a B&M, and *knock on wood* my car hasn't had any problems yet. Also, the shifter was on the car when I purchased it.
Also, if notice the results of the poll so far; 7 voters with stock shifters have had the problem, and 6 voters with a SSK have had the problem.

I've been starting to experience the "pop out" and sometimes i can't get it into 2nd at all. I went to the dealer and they said they have to "test drive" is and experience the problem before they'll work on it

I've had it happen on this car, as well as my M5, and Mach 1 Mustang. It would happen when I would pull down and to the left, which was my fault. When I pull straight down like I should be doing, I've never had it happen in any of my cars.
Never happened at the strip though. Only on the street when I was turned at a angle while shifting, for whatever reason. But it's never popped out of 2nd. And I've tried to make it pop-out many times before (while decelerating, on hills, etc..)

hey marksi you do know that the Porsche SSK and B&M SSK are one and the same thing right? They even have the same part numbers on there... it's annodized black instead of blue but otherwise they're the same... On the 997 they are not but for the 996 they are.

If people are worried because Porsche is not going warranty their tranny then yeps, pay the extra 500 or so it would take to get the part and have it installed at a dealer by all means. It's a sad state of customer service these days and very inconsistent from dealer to dealer. On the one hand you have really good/fair dealers that work WITH you so that you are a repeat customer and then on the other hand you have dealers that just say the dumbest stuff ever in terms of why something broke. There are still dealers in California that will VOID your warranty if you install after-market diverter valves knowing that there is a problem with the OEM ones. Then a few miles away there is a dealer that installs after market ones under warranty. Strange.

I agree... I'm one mile away from the Chicago P car dealer and my friend is the head foreman.. he tells me all the stories... I actually came in a few times to see firsthand how the regional rep declined one tranny after another just because It had a B&M... nowadays, the service manager can not warranty the tranny without the regional rep's approval... I can go on and on...
I was lucky cause mine was changed in 2003 b4 they all got into this subject.

yeps it's all about saving money, making more of it and so forth. It will get worse too. As they make more and more cars and get into all the sectors, SUVs, 4-doors and so forth it'll be like a small version of Honda

So now I'm all paraniod about the b&m on my car, and wondering if I should install the stock on. My car already has a new tranny that's got 15k miles on it. Old tranny had stock shifter at time of failure.

Problem started at about 16K on 2003 with standard shifter. Porsche replaced the entire tranny; while they were doing that I had the OEM short shifter installed. That was one year, nine months ago, and the tranny has been flawless since then.

2001 with 17k on the clock when it started. B+M ssk.
It would be nice to see a poll of percentage of cars that actually have had the problem of all the members here. I really wonder how prevalent this is??

So far; 12 stock shifters to 6 SSK's.
I hope more people post in the poll. This is interesting info.

Mine did it starting around 10K with the stock shifter and my FVD shifter so it was not caused by the SSK! But then went away at like 25K and didn't really ever happen again!! Wierd
