Pirelli or Michelin

+1, Just switched 2 days ago from stock pirelli's (dont know which kind) and went with PS2s. Previously had PS2s on the M5, much better than stock continentals, so decided to go with PS2s again. Much pricer for the rears! Anyways, stock Pirelli's on 997TT went about 17k miles, coulda gone longer with the fronts but wanted a matching set. Much quieter ride, haven't gone high speeds yet, but feels much better than Pirellis. Street bumps however are more pronounced, likely due to the stiffer side wall, previously mentioned.
FWIW, friend had Hankook tires placed on his 997, says its better than PS2s, i have yet to go down that road, and doubt i will tho.

I found two different indications by Michelin for the introduction of the PSS:
January 2011 with a download of the official press kit
April 2011
Tirerack seems to have two sizes PSS for sale
TUV SUD independent test results against the Bridgestone RE050A, Conti Sportcontact 3, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT, Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric and Pirelli P Zero.
Nice video of the dubai introduction Dubai introduction
Good review of the above introduction on the UK porscheblog.
So I really wonder how it holds up compared with the Pilot Sport Cup, as you can read below it is not a replacement.
From a French interview with the Michelin project leader:
Rezulteo: What are the objectives of the Michelin Pilot Sport Super?
Jean-François Beaupère: We want the Super Sport Pilot become the product leader in high performance rises at first and second in terms of business but also image. He must pull all our ranges upward.
RZ: What is your strategy?
JFB: The absolute priority is given to our partners such as Porsche, BMW Motorsport, Ferrari, but also to tuners like AMG. The segment on which the Pilot Super Sport evolves is very competitive because the car manufacturers are demanding this type of tire for their vehicle.
RZ: How Does the Super Sport Pilot compare to the Sport Pilot 3?
JFP: The Pilot Sport 3 is intended mainly for small and medium-sized sports, as the Clio RS, the Golf GTi, Golf R etc. ... but also like the Audi TT roadster, and the amounts of certain sports sedans. The Super Sport Pilot is intended for very exclusive vehicles which we offer today to try the tire: Koenigsegg Ager, Gumpert Apollo, AMG Mercedes SLS, Italia Ferrari 458, Porsche 997 Turbo ... etc.
RZ: The Pilot Super Sport shares dimensions with the Pilot Sport Cup?
JFP: Yes including some mounted by Porsche. The 235/35x19 for example. However, these tires are not for the same type of user. The Pilot Sport Cup is for enthusiasts who regularly drive on the track. Pilot Super Sport brings more versatility with exceptional performance on dry and efficiency equivalent to that of the Pilot Sport 3 in the wet.
RZ: What is your strategy to demonstrate the level of effectiveness of the Pilot Super Sport? A record on the Nurburgring?
JFP: The first things that we can give you are the results achieved by the Pilot Super Sport in a test conducted by TÜV SÜD. He was faster than its competitors by at least 1 second on a lap of Papenburg. We do not exclude the Nurburgring, but their new approach of business focuses on public access to the track. So we have not yet been able to find a date.

1)Forget about cup tires for daily driving...you will end crashing your car...
2)If you drive most in rain, get pirellis...For dry pilot sport is better...
3)Michelin are easier to get warm and so your brakes will work better anytime...Its very easy to activate ABS with pirellis, both rosso and corsa...and very difficult to activate it with PS2...Overall I would prefer PS2

Thanks for taking the time to post the interesting test. I wish the test had included Michelin Sport Cup though! I mean that would be the gold standard and reference for which to measure this tire against.
Don't get me wrong -- the tire is obviously top notch against similar street tire competitions. Just that when I first read about it, the "super" name, I was hoping for a breakthrough, the Superman of tire: Dry performance equal Michelin Cup, wet performance equal Michelin Pilot!

Here is my informal tire weight ranking, courtesy of Tire Rack's Tires for Porsche 997 Turbo 235/35-19 front, 305/30-19 rear (pls pardon and correct any mistake).
The number in bold are the weights of one front plus one rear tire:
Michelin Cup: front/rear 20/27 = 47 lbs
Pirelli Corsa: 21/26 = 47
Continental Extreme Contact DW: 21/28 = 49
Michelin PS2: 22/28 = 50
Continental SportContact 3: 22/28 = 50
Pirelli Rosso: 22/29 = 51
Bridgestone RE050A: 24/31 = 55
******Hantook Ventus V12: 24/32=56**********
Toyo R888: 25/31 = 56
Bridgestone RE11: 27/31 = 59

Don't know about the performance, but keep in mind the very important parameter of tire weight. If I am not mistaken, a set of Hankook will be 56 lbs per side, a little on the heavy side. Hope this helps.

Pirelli Pzero's are more of a DD tire (220 treadwear). I would use the sport cups on the track but they tend to get very slippery in the wet. I would get the Michellin PS2's instead of the sport cups.

The take-home lesson for me is that in general, best to stay with Michelin or Pirelli.

Used them a couple of times on previous 11's but found they tend to get very noisy after @ 5,000kms. I've used the rossos as well as the Continentals but would have say I'm a PS2 convert since.....much quieter, smoother and wear better to the very end.

I did just pzero as well.
I wonder if they are available in the states... Neither rosso nor corsa, just pzero. Its a rather new iteration I was told, maybe 1-2 years? Car had rosso's when I got it but was in desperate need for a change. The only thing that annoys me with them is that they do need some time to warm up...
