My turbo is now in for repairs...need advise

I posted a few weeks ago about some misfires
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ble-997-a.html

It's in the shop with a guy I trust. He's been working on Porsches his whole life, tough I will admit, most of his experience is with 996 turbos and older. He does have experience with 997, just not as much. Anyway, he got into the car today and figured out the last guys to work on it 2.5 years ago only hand tightened the plugs, used the incorrect plugs (or at least not the ones recommended by evoms), stripped a few exhausted bolts and did not have a boost hose on well (stripped that too). Otherwise, no big deal and all fixable...

Here's the issue now. He says there is at least 0.020" axial play in the turbos and he is recommending I send them off for rebuild before having him put them back. Car has 38k, seems a bit early, but ok. Where should I send them and what will it cost? Is this one of those deals where it would be better to upgrade the VTGs (champion?) and intecoolers and go big hp? Thanks again to the forum!

To my knowledge the VTG's are not able to be rebuilt. Call Champion for more info. However I would think you would get 100,000km before they need a rebuild...

Would be quite sure your mechanic knows the factory tolerance
Seems to make sense just to get it back on the road and see how it runs.

that could be really expensive if the turbo decides to take a dump into the engine

That amount of play is perfectly fine. A journal turbo should always have some play when there is no oil pressure, as it is this space that is consumed by pressurized oil. Your turbos are likely perfectly fine, so there is no need to spend money unless you want to upgrade.

That would be great!...I'm assuming you have some real world experience with this? My feeling now (based on your comment) is put it back together and if one grenades, then get the coolers/pipes/65mm vtgs and go for 700+ hp. I would do that anyway, but kind of have my heart set on adding something to the stable in the spring/summer and would like to pay cash for it. Spending 20k on the turbo right now would make that tougher. It's already needing 7k in basic maintenance without a turbo issue

So, it does appear I had a small boost leak on the right allowing the right turbo to over-spin. It will need to be addressed... I'll let you guys know which direction this heads
