Awesome! I have a question? How involved is it to change from vtg to gt turbos? I was planning on going the upgraded vtgs but, since I'm following your advice... Might as well... I'm looking at the efrs 7163...

My suggestion is to grab a set of SRM 4.5" intercoolers. SRMs price is as low as everyone elses, are 4.5" instead of 3.5" like most others and are beautiful pieces. I do believe the flag ship coolers are made by AMS but cost twice the money and with the Y-pipe you might not want, so I think most people will shy away from them. If you have the money, just buy the AMS now!
Do you know if the SRM intercooler will drop in? Or will it require significant trimming?

The EFR 7163 spool as well as stock VTGs and made 1100 WHP on a 997.1. They are a direct bolt on but require new oil/water lines. The SRM turbos come with the lines. You'd also be looking at a new diverter valve (blow off) because they are part of the VTG turbos. Pretty simple upgrade for someone somewhat mechanical.

The intercoolers will require the usual trimming as per all the after market coolers. Because they are 4.5" instead of 3.5" you will also need to make a cut on the top duct and sleeve 1 1/2 into the other. Simple cut with a hack saw or dremel. Mine have been great and leak free.

1.proefi. unless the 997 is different there are no lights on my dash at all. use the 128 over the 112. its a better unit
2. turbos. you missed the best aftermarket BOLT ON turbo there is. the b/w 7163. spools like a monster and makes 1200 hp. pricewise its as good as any turbo out there and you dont need aftermarket w/g or bov. its all contained in the turbo.
1. Proefi 128 vs 112, the 112 is the race version and arguably better than the 128. It's smaller, but doesn't have wideband. However, the 128 is aging and doesn't have the on-the-fly features of the 112. The 112 allows live tuning and has several advancements, faster processor, etc. Big differences in 996 vs 997 as the 997 is very CAN-heavy. The 996 had limited CAN features whereas the 997 uses a ton - hence the dash lights. ProEFI / D3 hasn't figured out the CAN ID's for these yet... I'm not holding my breath.

2. I agree these are a pretty legit turbo Can't wait to see what they do with the heads complete.

They spool like modified VTG's. Also, for my particular setup (similar to 32krazy) it's more like a 3.74L.

You can't get a true 3.8 without going to a much larger piston, which requires a different sleeve and machine work on the case. Sean does his builds without machining the case, but that limits the displacement. He does a 102mm piston vs others that use a 102.6mm and a 103.4mm.

102mm = 3.74L
102.6mm = 3.79L
103.4mm = 3.849L

This assumes you maintain the factory 76.4mm stroke.

Nothing wrong with any of the methods, it's strictly customer choice.

the 7163 has the ability to recirculate the air back into the turbo so divertors arent needed. thats part of the savings in buying a b/w turbo

granted im no computer guy. can barely use my iphone! live tuning? im not familiar with that. i was told the processerors are the same between the 112 and the 128 but i wouldnt know a processor from a microwave oven!

FYI with a durametric the dashlights go away on the 997 with proefi.

Only real issues I have with the proEFI is no cruise control (not a big deal) and it would be cool if I could see ethanol content, (or other "gauges") etc on the dash.

No ****? I have my durametric, I should try that. I'll send you a pm!

I use the CANBUS display to see all the ethanol readings, etc.

If you have the Durametric "pro" you can turn off your SES light.. forgot where the setting was, but when I saw it.. I knew it was right. its under "coding".

VR6tee, are you using the SRM 4.5" coolers on your car? Or the old Switzer ones? Couldn't see it in your other thread. I'm curious about them for a 997.2 but haven't heard anyone using them on yet yet as people seem to only go with champion or AMS. They have great value for the price.
