First year 997.2 gremlins?

The new 997.2 comes with a totally revised engine and a new PDK. Will 1st production year have problems? Will you wait a year or two to shake all the gremlins?

For you with an 06 997 it goes without saying. however note that when the next generation (991) shows up in 3/4 years then the same question I raised applies - will you skip its 1st production year. If you do, you'll wait 4/5 years from now.

I would not skip the first production year as in the past problems have been minimal . Notice that many here have 2005 997 cars . The 996 had afew initial snags in 99 . The 993 in 95 did not .

I bought a 2007 Turbo . That was a first production year . No problems .
I bought a 997S launch car three days after it was launched. No problems .

+1 They do lots of testing. The 991 as already being driven in all kinds of conditions. Can't wait for the build date for the new turbo.

I've had many Porsches and many "launch cars" as they call them. Minimal problems, if any. My '09 997S is due in Oct - wouldn't give reliability a second thought

I'd expect a few software/code updates/revisions for the PDK over the first two years of production and some revisions to the programs that will run the new DFI system. Hopefully the crank case etc was properly tested and re-tested so there are no oil leakage issues. Other than the engine and trans changes (PDK only) mechanically the car is essentially the same as the current version.

I have a 05 997 3.6 and 95 993, no problems at all.

However, I'm awaiting a 998 turbo rather than a 998 base because I'm dying to get a 997 turbo, but can't justify picking up 480 hp AWD version of my 3.6 coupe. I'll probably keep the 05 997 though

gmoney, I would not be worried about RMS anymore. I have had a 2006 and now a 2007 and track the heck out of it with no issues. The new block in the 997.2 (2009) is a 2 pice block where the old version is a 4 piece. Also there are a lot less moving parts in the new 2009 than previous cars.

I am not sure how there can be fewer moving parts in the engine. Still 6 cylinders, 4 cams, 24 valves, etc. Seems there can't be that many fewer moving paryts in the new engine.

You are right , it can't be !! Correct info is : New engine has 40% less PARTS , 22% stiffer , rotary masses 7% down , weight 5 kg (11 lb) less and is fixed little lower than before ...( page 12 - 13 / 23 )
