'99-01 vs. '02+ ?!?

Hey guys,

Im new to this forum but have been reading your very helpful advice for a while and am at a tough decision (I apologize in advance if this is a repeat question):

1) I am looking to buy my first porsche 911 with $25k - $30k to spend...looking to acquire one with approx. 50k - 60k miles on it...

2) Due to the RMS problems, slight fear of the dreaded but supposedly rare intermediate shaft failure and other common issues...I cant decide which year would be better buy for money...from what I understand (which is limited cuz Im a newb to porsche), the 3.6L seems to be a better designed and more reliable engine than the 3.4L...but the '02+ is approx. $4k to $5k more than the '99-'01 models...in your honest opinion, do you think it is really worth the extra money to get the '02 or should I just try and get a 3.4L the cheapest (but in good shape, runs well, etc.) I can because problems, repairs and maintence are still going to be bend me over regardless lol

3) Also, I downloaded the service manual from www.cannell.co.uk/manuals.htm but I think this is for the 3.4L if I am correct? How similar (or dissimilar, rather) are the manuals between the 3.4L and 3.6L and would this manual even help at all if I were to get an 02+?

Advice is much appreciated!! Thanks guys!!

This is the 997 Forum, it looks like you are asking about a 996

I can answer because I had both cars so if the thread moves to the 996 forum I can look there too.

There is a difference in the 02 . There's more Hp . The lights are very easy for xenon theft as they pop out in an instant . Mine were stolen . The car did have RMS and it was fixed under warranty .

I know that you aren't going to listen .. but I urge you to pass on the car . The cost of maintaining a high mile 996 where you did not put those miles on the car yourself throws a large unknown history variable into buying that car . Once in , if the repairs pile up the cost can bring that 30K car to 50 K in two years and with that you coiu;d wait another year and buy a CPO 997 .

That's my advice. Wait .
