Question Tiptronic over rev?

Hi all,

I have a 07 997 tiptronic, is there any way it can be over revved by accident in M mode or would the computer sense it and bounce it to the correct gear?

I tried to over rev the tiptronic on my old Allroad, and when it reached the rev limiter it would shift to the next gear. Annoyed the hell out of me as I wanted it to hang on to the gear before the corner.

If you hit the rev limiter you'll trigger one of the low range over-revs, but they're really nothing to worry about. It is impossible to trigger any of the more troublesome ranges (say ranges 4 to 6) on a tiptronic. The only thing you can ever do is get into range 1 and 2 etc. It's only possible in manual mode as it will let you hit the limiter, in D the system should upshift before redline and you can never downshift into an over-rev situation (even in M mode.)

Northvan,

Is there any way you can damage the engine in a tip? or does the transmission protect any possibility of a over rev

I would imagine that you could find a way to damage the engine, but I am sure that Porsche has put in some safe guards to limit there exposure, such as auto shifting at the top of the revs and not gearing down when the revs are too high. I have the Tip in my Touareg and when I want to downshift multiple gears it waits until it is "safe" for the engine speed to do so.
