I've driven both the 6MT and Tip versions of the 997.1, and own the latter. Calling a Tip sluggish is an overt exaggeration.

Yeah, it's not for everyone, but it suits my purposes well. To each there own.

The guy that gets on here with the FWD Saab and runs the 911/Tip down - that one kills me. That takes some serious stones.

When I was a "youngster" there were two things that I thought were just car evil: ATs and FWD. The latter, I'm still not so sure about.

+1. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but I suspect many drivers here (and some of the posters in this very thread) would, more often than not, actually be quicker in the Tip than in the 6MT. The Tip gives up far less in performance than some might think, particularly in manual mode. It takes a talent that most of don't have (and I am absolutely in that "average driver" category myself) to always wring the maximum performance out of the 6MT. I can't do it, and I know I'd be faster in a Tip. I get the fact that some prefer to row their own, and I'm glad that Porsche offers us a number of transmission choices, but I really don't understand why people feel the need to go to the trouble of creating a thread like this or posting to belittle the choices of others... Are they really so insecure?

My .02...

I have always driven a car with an auto tranny (last car was an XJ8).

I now have the 997.2 PDK. I almost *always* shift it manually, and I *do* feel more "involved" in the drive to the extent that I am actively deciding to keep the RPMs up and shift near redline (for fun/noise/speed), or shifting more quickly (for fuel economy or comfort). You have to think a little more. It's fun. I like it.

But as has been said above -- there are plenty of valid reasons why someone would choose even a Tip over a 6 speed. Couldn't a really lazy person (I've been accused of such before) start a thread called "manual+clutch pedal=crap... what sane person wants to do all that extra work?!" ;-)

oh and one other valid reason... I put the PDK in auto mode in my recent (first) Autocross... it was hard enough just steering, breaking, and figuring out the course... I would've been MUCH slower using a 6 speed (or shifting the PDK manually) autox'ing

Yeah, and probably it should be started. I'd bet most manual guys wouldn't be so "offended" like some of the people with automatics. If they do get offended, then that's just being a hypocrit.

I still don't understand why so many are so defensive with a transmission choice It's the one thing that I've noticed gets under people's skin. People make comments all the time about wings, body kits, rims, car color, interior, etc. For the most part, these comments don't get the same attention as the "tranny".

As long as it makes you happy, who cares what people think?

Enjoy the P-car. I enjoy mine everyday. And it doesn't offend me when some people comment... "oh, you should have gotten a turbo? Why would you want a C4S?"

The car makes me happy and that's all that matters.

In a 997 S Tip from a Z06 manual. Trips around town seem less of a hassle and I'm not a p_ssed off at all the stupid stuff people do on the roads (see "Approaching P Car" string). W/the Z I had to be in the right frame of mind to take any trip. If I lived in TX, NV or AZ I'd have insisted on the 6 speed but in NYC its borderline masochistic.

it's the era of political correctness and consensus. people look for reasons to be offended while demanding apologies from people who didn't mean to offend. It's total BS. So someone has an opinion that others dont agree with, why should those people care?

Personally i think anyone that got offended about the statement need to really evaluate why they care about someone else's opinion so much.

Some morons actually get off on making statements like the original poster did...they want to get a rise from you and stir things up

No reason to have to defend or explain your choice...better off not even responding to them and they will go back to rubbing one out for themselves.

F**k... we don't comment about the white belt and patent leather shoes that he wears when he cruises around !!

You can call the tip sluggish, less responsive etc. Many words to describe it but crap is definitely not a word that owners like to hear. You cannot blame people to not get offended by this type of thread.

The only thing people truly own is their response. They make a choice to be offended—regardless of the issue.

They can be offended by truth but it is does not become less truth even if they are offended. Tiptronic is just, well, crap.
Pretty much almost same crap that I have in my Lexus. It is drivable but it takes off that certain edge from how 911 car should respond then you floor down gas.

Talking

I have driven both Tiptronic and the PDK....Each has it's benefits and I have likes and dislikes for both, but I also have positives and negatives for manual transmissions as well but that's another discussion altogether. Lets just say that I don't think either are crap or bad etc. etc.. We all have our personal likes and dislikes, so be it!!

Anyway, with all this discussion it brought back memories of my very first Porsche "Automatic".......

Anyone else driven a Sportomatic!!!! Now that's a tranny that evokes many opinions!!!

Thing is, no one asked for WHF's opinion about TIP. And I think that is the point. If someone had asked opinions TIP or No? - that's different, but to come on out of the blue and attempt to "enlighten" everyone - really? Thanks, but no thanks. I believe most of us can think for ourselves - and those who cant's least problem is what kind of transmission they end up with.
