GT3 RSR wins Laguna Seca and the 2009 ALMS GT2 Championship

The Flying Lizard Motorsports 911 GT3 RSR driven by Patrick Long/Jörg Bergmeister wins Laguna Seca and the 2009 ALMS GT2 championship.

The last 5 laps were a battle royale with the No. 3 Vette which was a total bully. The Vette was coming strong but in my view it has an unfair advantage as it was allowed to race the LS7 7L GT1 engine. OTOH, the Porsche has a mandated 55lb extra weight penalty !?!

This Porsche victory was their 100th Series class victory, a first for any manufacturer!

punting the No. 3 Corvette into the front straight wall on the last lap was unfortunate...but they were both driving pretty rough...hope Magnussen was not injured as he hit pretty hard

Magnussen was driving rough, not Bergmeister. I do not tolerate bullies especially in racing. Magnussen crashed against Bergmeister on the final straight and unsettled him. Bergmeister defended his turf and properly so. The Vette team is a great team but they seem to have this season a chip on their shoulder as they are overly aggressive and unsportsman-like. Early on the No 4 Vette caused a crash on turn 2 by being overly aggressive even overtaking Brabham's LMP1 on that turn.

I completely agree. And, I really like the Corvette guys!

Throughout the race it felt like they weren't all that composed and it came to a head at the end. When the only way Magnussen had to gain an advantage on Bergmeister is to use the Pit Out lane for an inside pass, his frustration was getting the better of him. Still though, as a fan of this series who brought two friends who had never seen this sort of thing, it was an absolutely fantastic race. So damn exciting.

And, again, I really like the Vette boys so I do hope that Jan is alright. I know Jorg was "still shaking" immediately after the event so he was humble but still not going to be pushed around. That's a four-time champion right there. Congratulations to him, Pat Long and the rest of the Lizards team.

+1

Gavin left Sofronas out of the race due to his agressive and unnecessary overtaking one a restart...

This race was an absolute joy to watch !

The Porsches are 4.0L and 450HP ? How about the Vettes ?

The Corvettes were loud and obnoxious the whole race. I do hope nobody from either team was injured. My hats off to the Flying Lizard team, that was some incredible driving. I was a guest of the Panoz team though, was hoping they'd get on the podium.

I was in the Audi Corral and tent and everyone there was glued to the track or the CCT as this played out. Everyone made sure to let Joerg know their support of him during his cool down lap, too, with a huge round of applause as he drove by.

I love ALMS for the close racing and multi-class format. Nothing like seeing de Ferran/Fernandez battle to the last lap and the #45 and #3 go for broke to finish the season.

The Corvette Team saw Sebring `07 and said "If it's legal for Ferrari to Bump out the Lizards on the last lap, then we can too". Jan tried the EXACT same maneuver on the Lizards....

http://autostream.com/2009/10/ghost-...s-for-the-win/

...but this time the Lizards said "Not Again" and fought back with equal force, can't blame them for that. Good for him, but this escalation needs to stop before it gets worse.

No argument there. Clean racing is always better racing.

Thanks for posting the video. Really hard to tell from that angle, but it sure looked like he really pinned him to the wall. Not that he held his line, looked like he came into him. Were there any protests or contests after the finish?

More informed people than me have ruled they are both to blame and should be punished equally.
