Exactly how I feel about the M3. Nice, but a compromise. It's nice to have the choice though, at least I can still get some thrills driving M3 with a baby in the back seat

I would say you would miss it on a longer trip, especially on non-smooth roads. Hard to beat the smooth ride of a 335, but that's where it ends.
Having had 335, M3 and 530, the C2s is so very different in the driving experience.

I don't miss any of my BMW's . I have had 19 of them alongside my Porsches and even now have an M3 .

BMW's a great cars but a Porsche is more than just a car .. it's a driving experience . Everything from it's timeless design to the sound of the rear engine enhance the the driver engagement . The 6 speed gearbox slices like butter in contrast to the sloppiness of the BMW . Each time the Porsche is driven one learns more about what made the car a multi decade benchmark . Your vehicle is that tiny way of capturing a piece of automotive history .

The only thing you might miss with the BMW is the lack of worry taking it to the supermarket , mall , or parking lot . BMW's seem to get less dings because they are shaped with less curves . They also get less negative attention and are more anonymous when parked .

In motion the exact opposite occurs . A tricked out 335i seems to lure the immature street racers moreso only because they believe a victory is more attainable .

A Porsche 911 is sophisticated , mature , and expensive enough where most owners don't feel the need to run it around on the street --not because they would lose .. but because they have too much as stake . In short -- a Porsche 911 is a step in the direction of driving maturity.

My 335 is currently running 330 whp and 351 wtq on the dyno with GIAC stage 1, AMS FMIC, AR Design DP and Bastuck Exhaust. GIAC stage 2 is around the corner and I suspect will put me in the 350/360 whp and 370/380 wtq range. I also have KW coilovers, iForged 19's and a host of cosmetic mods.

My car only has 17k miles and will either sell the car and get the 997 Carrera S or 996 turbo. My other option is to just keep the 335 and in about 5 years or so look at a 997.2 turbo (used).

Any thoughts on what you think I should do? Are there any other former BMW owners that can chime in? This would be my first porsche so any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance
i had 2 bmw's, nothing compares to a porsche, like they say "there is no substitute"......period

I just traded in my '08 e92 335i. I had the JB3 and the power was awesome. I had ordered a fully-loaded M3, but decided 2 days before my M3 was delivered that I wanted the C2S when I found one locally that was almost exactly how I would have ordered it. Test drove it for the weekend, and haven't thought much about the M3 since.

The chipped 335i has more effortless power (don't need to shift much since it has such ungodly amounts of torque throughout its range), but it doesn't come close to the experience of the 911. The throttle response of the N/A engine, sound of the exhaust, feel of steering, fit/finish of the interior, and looks don't even compare. The driving experience of the 911 can always be described as special - I feel like I'm driving the car for the first time everytime I turn the key on the lefthand side and drive. Also, I liked the looks of the 335 and M3, but they're far too commonplace - the 911 has much more presence. People also tend to get out of your way when they see you coming on the highway much more quickly.

Wow - thanks for all the great feedback!

Is it obvious there are very passionate car enthusiasts on this board and it sounds like any ex-BMW owners are happy to have made the switch. I have been reading a ton of posts on this forum and the mentality is so different from posts on the BMW forums I frequent. Not to say the BMW forums are bad or negative (I love my fellow BMW enthusiasts) but there definitely is a different mindset overall.

I will continue to be addicted to this forum to assist in my decision, reading everything I can about the driving experience, features and most importantly, mods!

I think I will exercise prudence in attaining my Porsche goals based on personal experience, in years past I bought an A4 when I wanted an S4, I bought a 335 when I probably should have waited for the new M3. I am leaning towards sticking with the 335 for the time being and when the time is right get a used, 997 TT.

Here is pic of my 335 for those who are interested

love your 335i
I think it's also good to move on to tt instead of na models.
If you're hunger for tq then TT is the answer.

Have had my 997S for about 6 months; great car but not what I'm looking for. Will be selling to get E92M3. I need a more comfortable ride, with usable trunk and DCT.

I'd suggest you drive one for a couple days to be sure it's daily driveable for you. I don't deny they are true sportscars and phenominal ones at that. Don't expect them to be rattle/squeak free either. They are not good DD's IMO. From golf clubs to dry cleaning, it's a pain in the ass. Do what I should have done before "pulling the trigger"....i.e. extended test drive.

I went from a 2007 335ic, stock, to a 2008 C2 Cab. Even though the 335 has more torque, the weight of the car largely negates the effect (folding hardtop -what a waste!). The HP/weight ratios are actually very similar. The C2 feels every bit as torquey, also bone stock, and the engine has a much more pleasing note. The gear box on the Porsche (manual) is head and shoulders above BMW's, and the Porsche suspension feels much better (confirmed by skid pad numbers.) I'm sure you can tell I'm enjoying the P car much more than the BMW. But....... they were/are both my third car, not a DD. If I had to drive one of them every day I think the Porsche would be more difficult to live with, but I suppose that would depend heavily upon the type of driving you do.
Tough choice my friend. Honestly, if you are looking for a beastly and liveable DD, I'd say go for a used M5 or M6.

I had an E46 M3, and I currently have a 997 c2. There is no question that the M3 is the better daily driver, but the Porsche is the superior sports car. The M3 is definitely a great everyday touring car with superb amenities, but it is not the quintessential sports car. The Porsche is more responsive, has better handling, and will put a smile on your face everytime you hit the gas. As a matter of fact, I have a Boxster, and I would pick that over the M3. In my opinion, Porsche is just the superior vehicle. Period.

I realize you'll probably need to take all of this with a grain of salt, given that you are on a porsche forum, but i tend to agree with almost everyone. Having gone from a BMW to 997 C4, and this is totally honesty, there are days i long for the back seat. However, the Porsche just has a feeling, a sensation of being a living thing. Now sometimes that takes the form of a weird rattle, or the occassional nose lift...but i think it's worth it. After some years of what felt like merely steering, now it's driving. Exciting, compelling, and it makes me feel 13 again...every day. Hard to put a price on that (though they do a good job of it). Best of luck in your decision process.
