Worn fan switch - repaint? replace?
My new-to-me '05 is near perfect (just 35k mi.) except for some fairly inexplicable wear on the fan control. Is this a common wear point? Can it be touched-up, or must I get a new rocker? If I do replace, will it wear again like this? The temp control is showing a little of the same, so...? Is this a common high-wear item? My Audi at 10yrs and 200k miles doesn't show anything like this except for maybe the top of the shifter ****.

I also have an 05 and everything still looks like new, but I did check out some cars prior to mine that did have that problem. Can't understand what people are doing to rub them down like that...personally, I would replace them...it would drive me nuts if mine were like that!!

Common wear item on Porsche with the rubberized soft touch controls. You'll be unable to replace the toggle without replacing the entire unit (according to Champion Porsche)
My 05 Carrera still is ok (but the rubber is softening and perhaps about to go...I suspect the summer heat "liquefies" the rubberized material). On my 05 Boxster with triple the miles...not even a rubmark..go figure

This can happen with any car that has painted interior surfaces. Generally black parts use black plastic rather than paint but as a result of low production numbers ( possible with Porsche) often the parts are moled in natural color and painted for each interior. Also parts will often be painted so they match better.
The only solution to minimize the risk or peeling paint is to make sure one's hands are clean make sure there is no sun screen, oil or hand cream on your hands. Stuff like that will destroy paint in no time.

A lot of manufacturers (VW, Porsche; Audi) tried these soft touch rubberized buttons and they would wear if you used a lot of hand cream. My Touareg was driven by my wife before, and she ended up with the NAV and HVAC unit being replaced under warranty.
The only way to repair it is to replace it, you can also try the matte black model paints (Testor) and that has worked for some others in the past.

Ended up getting both replaced under warranty 2 wks ago when I had my 3 year service. Apparently, if one has to pay out of pocket, the cost is quite exorbitant because the entire center console must be removed.
FWIW, the passenger air bag warning light also had a small crack which was replaced under warranty.

For an 05, with heated seats, the part number is 997 653 111 09

Thanks for the input. I'll have the 45k coming up, I have CPO (kinda surprised it wasn't addressed then by the dealer) and I'm going to add a Denison or Mo-Porsche-40 (TBD), so while the console is apart....
