Water pump "busted"

Water pump "busted"
Heard a rattling "mini knocking" noise coming from the engine, thought it may have been simply due for an oil change (last oil change 6k miles ago), went to my indie mechanic who told me (and showed me) it was my water pump which was making the noise, and needed replacing. To the tune of $920.00. OUCH!!!!!! Have to wait about a week before I can replace this, as funds are kind of tight right now. He told me this "just happens" on 997's at times. Good thing I'm on vacation (at home) and hanging out with the family all the time.
About how long can one drive, and get away with having a faulty water pump before REALLY bad stuf happens??? Also, does this really "just happen"?
Thanks!!!

it just happens. mine went at 140,000 miles. The rattle is the beginning, then you start losing coolant. I guess you have like 3-4 days max. Make sure you get the OEM pump with metal gasket. That price seems a little high for an indie. Water pump with gasket is $219 + 300 for install: http://www.suncoastparts.com/product..._Code=997maint
