S5 Convertibles have only a V6 in them??? huh

I was looking at a Audi S5, for my buddy and saw that the convertibles only have a V6 in them, is that a cheap way to cut back or what? I'm quite sure people dont even ask that question, unless they are a 6speedonline person..... Alot of people still think they, automatically they get a V8, when they buy a S5, i know i thought so until i did my research. The price is also higher then the coupe.
Here are the comparison:
Engine
Type: V8
Displacement cu in (cc): 254 (4163)
Power bhp (kW) at RPM: 354(260) / 7000
Torque lb-ft (Nm) at RPM: 325(440) / 3500
price for the coupe $50,500.

S5 convertible:
Displacement cu in (cc): 3.0 liters
Power bhp (kW) at RPM: 333 bhp
Torque lb-ft (Nm) at RPM: 325 lb-ft.
price for the cab 55,000.

So you tell me I'm going to pay more for a drop with less horsepower and smaller engine. Please tell me you feelings on this, and which one would you still pick up if you had to...

The *supercharged* V6 is replacing the V8 in new Audis, as it has a much wider powerband (notice torque is similar, and the power way more spread out). They're roughly "equivalent" in many ways. The V6 gets better mileage, though.

In general, do you want a coupe or a convertible? That really should be what influences you. Convertibles have always commanded a premium over coupes. Cayman excepted

I have an '08 coupe with the V8, and love the car (although I do wish it had more power..when is the RS5 coming out???). I have heard good things about the new S/C V6, but to be honest I like the sound of the V8 much more. I agree w justinmm2 above, it just depends if you want a coupe or convertible. Either would be a great choice. Depending on what you're tastes are, I would buy an aftermarket exhaust/downpipes to enhance the sound of the V6. I'm sure that there will be a few available shortly. Good luck

I agree, it can't compete with the sound of the V8. The s/c v6 makes it a different car in my mind, but just my opinion. If I was going to but a great V6, I would but a 2006 997S for the same $ as a new S5 cab.

your absolutlty right (bhoov14), and i see no one picked the v6 as of yet, does audi realize they f--ked up...... no one is going to spend more money for less in this economy or any economy period.....

Afroman will become famous soon enough
you have to realize they want a car to appeal to customers, especially those who don't care for the engine size and they want the S5 Convertible, and even getting better gas mileage than its counterpart, the S5 coupe with the v8. The supercharged v6 provides plenty of power and tq for a person.

While I agree with the V-8 love I can also see why someone would want a superchared v6 that is very tuneable(chipped to over 400 horsies already in the s4) and gets better gas mileage. There has been very little after market attention for the v-8 until recently and forced induction is always going to be easier to tune.

the only thing that the V8 is better at is the sound. the superchargedV6 is an amazing engine, super efficient and fast.
if u still want a V8 u have to wait for the RS5 cabriolet which will hit the market in 2010.

I for one am waiting for the supercharged 6 to make its way to the coupe.

Granted the rumble of the v8 is intoxicating, but as others have said, it feels like it could use some extra grunt (especially compared to the torque in my stage 2).

This engine has been getting great reviews in the S4...I'm buying myself a S5 as soon the coupe gets the same treatment the convertible received (and promptly calling up APR or GIAC!).
