In this example, I would've paid $120k for this vehicle. $5k more to the seller than their trade in.

Trading in your car lowers your tax liability in most states.
Offering the person $5K over the dealer on a $120K car would end up being "less" then they're getting from the dealer.

Wow.. I'm in CA. So trading in your car and buying from a dealer is a suckers game. We have to pay "paid price" taxes with no cap. Unless a private party can help with the documentation price.
