October 2014 Appraisal of 1991 Nissan Pulsar GTI-RB
TO: David Oathes October 19, 2014
examination and appraisal: 1991 Nissan Pulsar GTI-RB
Dear Dave:
The car under examination is a 1991 Nissan N14 Pulsar GTI-RB. Nissan planned to enter the World Rally Championship Group A in 1990 through Nissan Motorsports Europe, where the car was sold as the Sunny GTI-R. It was a powerful turbocharged hatchback with a unique DOHC, 2-liter SR20DET engine, coded 54C, and developing upwards of 275 bhp. The cars are recognizable by the intercooler hood scoops and large rear wing. The GTI-R featured the ATTESA all-wheel drive system and was capable of 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds, a quarter mile in 13 seconds and a top speed of 144 mph. As required by the FIA, 500 cars were produced in 1990-91 for homologation purposes. But Nissan’s WRC Group A rally program was not a success and was halted after 1992. However Group N production class models were very successful, taking 1st and 2nd places in 1992.
Two models of the GTI-R were sold to the public. The RA model came with air- conditioning, power windows, power mirrors and ABS. The RB homologation model was stripped down for motorsports use, minus all the luxury items from the RA and with a base interior. It featured a close-ratio 5-speed gearbox and limited-slip front differential.
Sunny GTI-R models were sold in the UK, Netherland, Italy, Iceland and France. Pulsar GTI-R models were sold in Japan, Southeast Asia and Australia. It’s unlikely that any came directly to the U.S., unless for racing, which would make survivors very rare.
The GTI-RB model on offer is likely to be the only one in the U.S. at present; a right- hand drive model imported privately imported from Japan in 2005. It’s presently registered in Washington State and shows only 42,000 kilometers (26000 miles). It is remarkable for its completeness, rarity and condition, and includes an extensive list of largely unobtainable spares, including extra doors and fenders, a complete rear sub- frame and a more tractable wide-ratio 5-speed box from the RA model.
One of only 12 cars finished in brilliant white, this is also one of 31 examples upgraded by Japanese tuners Autech. Their work added approximately another 50 bhp, thanks to an improved cylinder head, and less restrictive exhaust. It also has JIC coil-over suspension, front and rear bracing strut bars, and the rare Motorsports front bumper with foglights. Underneath, the car’s key systems are extensively protected with carbon-fiber shields. This GTI-R features color-keyed lightweight ASA alloy wheels and has new Willwood 4-pot disc brakes. It rides on new BF Goodrich ZR-15 Sports tires.
Inside the GTI-R is impressively clean, with little visible wear, even to the driver’s seat. It has the factory rollbar/cage, navigator’s footplate and driver’s competition harness. Remarkably it has no dash cracks, but the first owner in Japan installed a stereo, adding a second speaker to the passenger’s door, which will require an appropriate cover.
Externally the panel fit is excellent with no evidence of crash repair, the paint is uniformly good, except for some scratches on the rear bumper and one small dent in the passenger door, which should be easy to remove. All fender flares and ground- effect panels are in place and none are damaged. The cars starts easily, idles smoothly and is described as “very fast” by the owner, who previously owned another example and has a basis for comparison. He reports slight oil pan gasket and transmission seepage.
I’d call this car a 2 minus as it sits, but judicious fettling could bring it up to a 2 plus or even a 1 minus, if the next owner is bent on a show career. This GTI-RB has enormous eye appeal and in my opinion, it’s an honest car. Since none of these have changed hands recently at auction, its rarity requires comparison with equivalent models. Tired Sunny GTI-R survivors can be found in Europe, but have either been raced or rallied and their rarity makes finding replacement parts a significant problem.
The same situation arises in Australia where a number of Pulsar GTI-Rs exist, but have been used (and abused) for 25 years, with modifications and high miles. This car is rare in that it is a low-mileage, high-performance competition hatchback which is also a candidate for a preservation class award. That’s an extremely unusual combination.
A homologated 1988 BMW 3 Series was recently exported from Australia, and sold for $35,000. I’d put this car in the same category and estimate its value – with all its spares –between $30,000 and $35,000. As they say: Go find another one.

Very nice example. There are a few RAs here in the states (a friend of mine has one), but I haven't seen an RB yet.
