In VA they have something called a trip permit. It allows you to drive the car without plates. You have to put the origin city and destination city and the Vin of the car. That along with the Bill of sale, title, etc should be all you need in case you get pulled over. I think the cost in VA is $5.

I purchased a 2008 911s in Philadelphia, PA, got a trip permit at DMV and full bill of sale from the owner. Drove it home to Oregon no issues.

I have either negotiated with the seller to let me use the plates till I register the car, but I will carry insurance, bill of sale and copy of license with me.

I have also put on a license plate from one of my other cars on the newly purchased car with the bill of sale, insurance, blah blah.........

One of the few times that I obey all the traffic laws so as not to get pulled over. So far, so good :-)

I have sold many cars in my days. Have always let the buyer use my plates to transport the car home. As long as the title changes hands I have zero liability since it is no longer my car. I never have had any problems in 40 years of doing this.

I have done the following, borrow a dealer plate (family owns a dealership), use the sellers or use one from another car. As others have said, take it easy. Make sure noting is out like a brake light etc...

PORSCHEAUDIOLUV is an unknown quantity at this point
Unless the rules are different in various states the plates belong to the car , so you should be able to buy the car and drive it hope with the existing previous owners plates. the plates are registered to the vehicle and the vin number .
It would be illegal for your friend / family to alllow you to use a dealer plate ( big fine I think i was told it is a $5000 fine if you are caught
good luck and enjoy the new car just drive it home
make sure your insurance is up to date
