Perhaps instead of a tip you could buy them a couple of drinks before the flight back

But seriously speaking, I knew a guy who flew his own plane and would charter with him flying, and he would get the luggage and everything, how much would you tip the owner of a Gulfstream???

Depending on what the situation is I may tip or may not just depends on the factors.

Private pilots of the nice planes are paid very well.
Every plane is nice, first let me say that, but not sure about the smaller ones (4-8 seaters) but the falcon 2000/900/and soon to be 7x, all G's 4-6 and 650, challengar 601's-604, and all comparable aircrafts, the pilots of these aircraft are paid minimum 100K for a cheif pilot position, and if you are in the 900/7x/global express, or G5-6-650, those guys are paid almost 200K/year.

And I know this from experience, but some of the cheif pilots (granted a very very small number) but I know of a chief pilot of a global express and a falcon 2000, that is also part owner of those planes.
So when you are paying 12,000/flight hour for a global express of that plane, a portion of that pay is going directly into the chief pilots pocket.

Granted that is a very very small number probably less than a handful in the world, but still I know of at least one....
When you are factoring in the $12,000/hour that it cost to rent the global express, that goes towards, the pilots salaries that are paid by the actual owners of the plane plus gas plus maint, and all other fees.

But to get back to the question at hand, no it is not normal to tip pilots. Not that it isn't a nice jesture on your part to tip them, but I think it is more offensive on their part. For instance the person I am referring to would probably think, why are you tipping me? I just rented you my plane for the flight. Might be looked at as a put down on their part.... not sure.

Especially the few that might actually own a portion of the plane that you or I are actually flying in, because there is a good chance that he makes more than we do. Being an owner is a little different than renting from netjets/marquise/exjecutive jet....

This post is way off. Your hourly figures for DOC and salaries are not accurate. Pilot salaries are all over the board.

Tipping charter pilots is very much appreciated. I know from experience. We didn't get paid well and were treated like ****, from management and passengers alike.

Tip your charter pilots, ALWAYS!!! Doesn't matter if you're on a GLEX or a LR24, they sure could use the help.

ok, in short, everyone can use some extra $$ no matter how well off they are financially, even me, so yes tip your pilots, and never be rude to them, and definetly don't think you are above them just because they are flying you somewhere and you are the one renting the plane.....And you can send some tips my way as well. I will set up a POBox and you can send directly to me.
in the memo, put "Jason's retirement fund".

much thanks.

Can anyone tell me the cost of the 25 hour per year Marquiscard? I looked online but you have to fill out a bunch of things to get any info.

we tip our charter pilots if they are extra personable, outgoing, and helpful. just as a "thank you" for making the trip over to our destination more pleasant.

Private Jets are supposed to be for more 'high-end' travelers. So I think it would be inappropriate to tip the pilots. Even the onboard help wouldnt be tipped. I think it is included in the price of the charter.

Is the 25 hour accounted for the flight time, or from arriving at the airport to getting the baggage.

off ground flight.
plus depending where you are flying from and to, you pay for the aircraft to get to you.

If you are in NY and want to go to CO, but the plane is based in FL, you pay for the plane to first fly from FL to NY, NY to CO, back from CO to NY, and then the airplane flys empty back to Fl. YOu pay for entire off ground flight time.

hopefully on a flight like that you aren't flying a global express at $12K/hr.

ALways tip everyone, it's the nice thing to do. If you have it, be generous, it can't hurt, only helps.

Tip everyone, cab, bellman, concierge, attendant, pilots, everyone....
it's the nice thing to do.
long thread for such a simple question.
