I do usually tip the concierge at the hotel a bit extra if that person has had any contact with coordinating a car service or something to the jet and it's done well, however. Four Seasons in Hong Kong set me up last time with a nice Arnage and chauffeur while I was in town and other stuff I think in part because I arrived/left on private aircraft. Needless to say, the concierge got a nice tip. The difference is the concierge is going above and beyond the call arranging this stuff... the pilot/co-pilot are just doing their jobs.
Just talked to a family member who manages private aircraft
He said, you certainly are not required to tip, if you are nice to them that is a bonus
most people do not even talk to them
enjoy the trip where are you going?
i don't think private jet pilots do that well. generally, the bigger the plane is, the more the pilots get paid. larger planes log more air hours and more pay. i would feel weird tipping the pilot though. What do you do? Slip them a hundred? weird....
I used to work at an fbo and we chartered cit 3's and lear 31/35 and saw many people tip our pilots. although dont remember seeing netjets customers tipping the pilots all that much
I brought up this issue at dinner last night with some friends, and a friend of mine made a good point. The main reason lawyers fly private isn't necessarily for comfort or scheduling, usually it's (at least in my case) for privacy, and so you can talk about the case/issue/negotiation with the client on the airplane, something you couldn't do on a public/commercial flight. As a result, you basically feel like you're "at work" usually when you're burning a firm's MarquisJet hours or Netjets rights... usually you're preparing for a stressful meeting or trial, dealing with a client who's freaking out and worried he's going to lose his business/assets/freedom, you do not feel like you're on vacation. Hence you're less likely to have the carefree attitude you'd have on vacation and less likely to have the time/energy to even think about whether the pilot/co-pilot needs to be tipped.
I suspect it's the same in other industries -- most of the time, the reason you're flying private is to get business done on the plane, whatever business you're in.
I should also note this only applies domestically... when overseas and chartering, I usually tip everyone involved if I think the underlying rate for the charter is reasonable.
Thanks for the feedback. I flew last Saturday with my family to Florida for a week long vacation. What prompted the question was after my arrival in FL, we exited the plane, loaded the luggage, and then the co-pilot just stood there looking at me. It appeared to be the "I'm ready for the tip look". This is the first time I have used a jet charter for personal travel, I was not quite sure what was expected.
I will likely only tip the pilot/co-pilot if they do something extraordinary, or go out of their way to make the experience better.
For the record, private jet service is the ONLY way to travel on a family vacation. 1 1/2 flight beats the hell out of driving 10+ hours with 3 screaming kids.
true that, I was on a trip with a group once in the Bahamas and one of the engines on our plane wouldn't start (problem with igniter). Unlike commercial travel where we would have likely been stranded until the next day (we were flying out of one of the smaller Bahamian islands late in the day), within an hour we had a replacement, a Falcon 900 pulled right up and we were off. This was especially valuable as everyone in the group needed to be somewhere that evening. Hey if Buffett bought into NetJets....there must be something right about private air travel.
Pretty much I only tip the Line guys at the FBO for dealing with my bags/car/limo/whatever, and maybe the flight attendant if service is good.
