I love threads like these as well... many grew up wanting a "Turbo", but reality is cars are getting heavier overtime and lost the true feeling of the road.
I think half my non-Pcar friends will think I'm crazy if I say I want a Boxster/Cayman/GT3 rather than a Turbo.

Personally, I never wanted a Turbo. Sure I look at them...they are Porsches afterall. But when it came time for the purchase...it was the C2S for me. I like the nice pure lines of the 911. If you pick up the Porsche dealer documentation for the 911...the Turbo isn't included. It has it's own literature...and that says something right there. Don't get me wrong, they are great cars, but just not for me. Truth is, I like the GT3 and GT3RS as well, but they are track oriented. I do all of my driving in town and on back roads...this is what the 911 is for. It's a "road" car. Plus, like I said, I like the lines of the 911. I'm not a big fan of the wings, holes, vents, etc all over the GT3, RS, and TT. Nice to look at, but not for me. Kind of like the girls you won't take home to Mom.

Oh really. That's a new one. Perhaps you are getting sports cars and race cars mixed up?

I knew that would get a response. I do like a more "raw car". Look at the BMW and such, i suspect most people can get in that car a drive it 130mph without much effort. When i want to take my car on a run in the hills i want to be involved in whats going on with my car. When i'm done i want to be a bit mentally tired. To answer the question as to why i sold the RS because it was losing value very fast is simple.. Get as much of my money out as i can so as to not take a huge hit. When the new GT3 comes out the RS will take another hit.
They are two waaaay different cars, the Turbo is more of a hyper GT car than a track day special like the GT3. That being said the fact that Porsche chooses to handicap the Boxster/ Cayman in the power department keeps me from buying one. I can't tell you how many times I thought really hard about the Boxster S!

I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!
You are right, it is not the fastest car on the road. Just really fast. And utterly fantastic to drive.
I took delivery of my 09BoxS last week. "Handicapped" its speed by getting a manual. All I can say is that I have a sunburned face and a smile that barely fits on it.

+1, though the Cayman's power handicapp doesn't bother me too much since I enjoy doing the twisties more than raw speed.
I'm on board. Just breaking in an RS60, just got back from a twisty mountain road drive. Every car has a limit, but I'm still looking for the Boxster's. Seems that no matter what the driver inputs, the car just sticks and goes.
For me this goes back to the Porsche Sport Driving School in late '07. They gave you lots of track time in the 911s, but the most fun I had was in the Boxster on the autocross course. The PSDS give NO track time in the Boxster or the Cayman. IMHO, if they gave students equal track time in the 987s, they would drive sales away from the 911s, and Porsche won't do that.

I've actually heard a friend of mine with a 997 TT make the same comment about the Boxster being more fun. He did a DE/track day with the Boxster and fell in love with it afterwards!

I've owned both....at the same time. Got the 911 itch after owning my S for a year...got a TT and after two weeks, realized that I had made a mistake. 39 months later (yes, it was the first car I leased) I got rid of the TT.
That's when I dropped the 3.8 Crate motor in the S. Haven't looked back. I was DE'ing it with Exotics Rally this past Friday on Thunderbolt in NJMSP and kept up pretty well with some very exotic cars.
My $.02.

Hey Dave, good to hear! As a 2001 "S" owner, I told my self if I ever get any of those dreaded engine problems I was going to drop another bigger engine in it. What did it cost you to drop a 3.8 in? And have there been any major problems?
