986S Turbo Build

About a week or 2 ago we started talking to this client. Drove the car down from quebec to our shop near baltimore, md. He is getting our modified 987 Turbo kit to fit his 986S boxster... Most of the same parts plus 987 Exhaust manifolds(oem porsche) and a 987 Throttle body(oem porsche). We have been getting a lot of calls lately about upgrading 986s and when it comes to spending money on the upgrades on older car for ~360whp vs. spending 60k for a new one with ~275whp, the turbo upgrade makes a good bit of sense.

This client is also getting upgraded brakes, our pro series sway bars, wheels and our 997 x51 clutch and flywheel package... gonna be a trick boxster when all is said and done!

The pictures.

Sounds like a great package. What a fun car that will be. Any body mods to go with it?

man, that thing is going to be such a sleeper lol. i can't tell you how many times i hear people talk sh*t about the 986 boxer for being slow....

i heard 986s have some sort of engine problem, I'm sure someone will give a more technical description than that lol. curious if that will that be addressed in this build? or drive it till it blows up then rebuild it?

They suffer from the same issues as 996s, 987s and 997s... Intermediate shaft failure and rear main seal.... We run the cars at such low boost levels that it take away from the reliability of the stock engine. We build turbo specific engines that are made to run at higher levels of boost but .3 bar doesnt cause issues.

Thanks for the reply Casey. I hate owning a 60k+ car knowing that any morning I can go downstairs and find a puddle of oil under the car.... *sigh* where's my recall...

Guess it's not as bad as the shaft failure that seems more prone to 986s.

this thing is going to be such a beast ! ! ! I can just imagine seeing this thing walking away from a 996Turbo from roll = p

the car will run about the same rwhp as a turbo 996 does... key is that the 986 is way lighter.

yup!

by the way, what sorts of limited slip differentials does TPC recommend for us less fortunate open diff car owners? i'm sure it can't be easy to put all that power to the floor after boosting.

Given all the known weaknesses of the M96 motor why would anyone subject it to forced injection even at low boost levels?

These motors are hard enough to maintain in stock condition let alone heat and increased strees from forced induction?

Most of the M96 guys I know all say big no to turbo or supercharging this platform unless you rebild with LN Engineering Block, stronger rods, upgraded IMS bearings etc.

I personally like the Guard LSD as it works well on accel and decel.

We have been supercharging and turbo-ing these motors since 1997 and the engines arent failing any more with FI than with staying stock. We have 7 year old 996s and 986s running our blower kits with ~100k on the system that still get serviced by us.

If you were to run higher boost levels you would likely get a higher percentage of failure but with low boost levels they are standing strong... Our 987 clientele is at about 80 kits world wide covering hundreds of thousands of miles without engine failure.

Cp.
