New Guy here!

Hi guys,
I just joined this site. I've been reading for about a week now. I do not own a Porsche now, but I sold the Harley and am now thinking of getting into the sports car thing. I have driven a friends boxster and loved it. I am thinking of a 2000-2004 in the 15-22k range. I also have always liked 911's and I like the new tech 996's. So a 2000-2002 car in the 20-25k range is what I was thinking there. Which car would make the better every day driver? I do not plan to race or rally so I want a car that will be pretty much turn key. I know it does cost more to work on.But I do not want a money pit. Thnks for the help! I also posted in the 996 forum.

There are some amazing deals on 986 04S out there. I had a 04S that I just loved until I got into an accident. Now I have an 05S. My opinion, the 04S is all you need but the 987 does feel more solid and the front end is more appealing. I never owned a 911 because Porsches are so expensive and expensive to maintain that I hesitate to own more car than I really need. I can just imagine the dealer marking up the cost of maintenance for a 911 just because! Plus I don't really like the fried egg look of a 996's front lights and I have never been a speed junkie anyway. The 997 are still quite expensive. Finally, aren't most exotic cars mid-engine cars? Here is a case where you can own a mid engine car for the price of a honda sedan! Now that is a deal!

Expect the maintenance for the car to be expensive (about $1000) for major maintenance on a boxster. And expect that the car might leak (Real Main Seal Issue). It's about $2k to repair if it happens. Mine had a leak at 28000 miles repaired under warranty. If you have one out of warranty, some have suggested getting extended warranty (which I have on my current 05S) or monitoring the leak and replacing the seal when you replace the clutch (in which case it only costs about $1000 for the seal). There are some stories of failed engines, but I have never personally experienced this. Good luck with the purchase!

Jeff

Buy a boxster if you are single and need to hook up but it is a great sports car as well ESPECIALLY THE LE in orange or the NEW Blue they have .
Buy a Cayman if you Just want a pure sports car and your car is your life ,spouse is secondary and optional .
Buy a 911 if you are an OF

Good Luck and welcome to the 6 speed ,there are lots of vendors on this site that can help you with everything you need along the way.Just ask

Thanks for the responses guys. I am married so I do not need a hook-up I'm thinking OF means old fart! I am 52 so I think that might be me! Although,I don't feel like an old fart! I just want something that is fun to drive every day. With not too many problems. But not boring like a real dependable japan model. I'm going to be researching and testing both models. I also like the Caymans but I don't think I would find one in my price range.

Welcome Gary! You found the right place to ask your questions! The members here are great and will give you a ton of info to go off of.

To give my .2 about your question....we have both a 996 and a Boxster. The Boxster is my DD and the 996 is the hubby's DD. We also take ours to the track and autox. I think they both make great DD's and would do it all over again. We've never been sorry that I've purchased either one of these cars. We enjoy our rides and couldn't stand driving something else to work (unless we had to due to snow..etc.). Plus, the pcar community is great. You'll meet some cool people!

Best Wishes!

Or you can do what I did and buy a Box "s" from California and then drive it back to Ohio!! Ride of my life!!(see link below). the trip had its good, bad and ulgly!!
LINK:
MY 1st cross country trip, and yes I was crazy.

Ebay has some frickin steals. Just do your home work or come on here and ask for some advice. I am a newbie myself but you could ask a lot of others on here. I know more about wheeling and dealing than mechanics.

California's economy has been desimated by job losses and the housing bubble. Plus porsches are more numerous out there(literally a dime a dozen). The poor guy I got mine off of had lost his job and was just trying to keep his house, so he was very motivated.

Try Craigslist also. If you don't dig the drive, you can always get a hualer company for around a $1000.00.

Good luck and Welcome
