NOS Kit for the Boxster

So I've been driving this car, (2001 Porsche Boxster 2.7l Tip), for 2 years now, 16th birthday present, now 18 going to college at Loyola Chicago. Friends have got BMW M3's, 335i's, Cayman S's, and a recent new 370Z my best friend bought. Everytime we do highway runs and track runs, they have to wait for "Yours Truly" to catch up lol. I don't mind though really, the ladies think my car has the most curves and the most reputable name, (although it sucks the most reputable name is also the slowest in the crew lmao) Recent suggestion was to Spray it with a 75 wet shot of NOS, and installed correctly by a German car specialist. SO, I want your input on this. Good idea? Stupid idea?

i feel your pain ...i have a new 2.9 cay and it is a SLUG compared to my last car 07 z06....i have a NOS kit i,m thinking of adapting to my cay. there are ALOT OF RULES you must follow eg...any type of traction controll,active handling,torque managment must be turned off...which means breaking into the cars ecm. one heat range colder spark plugs....a WOT switch,clutch switch,rpm "window" switch,never hit below 3200 rpm .get a book on nos...check were you live you may need a permit. a 75hp shot is okay IF you follow the rules and dont abuse it....stay in touch so i can follow your progress

Take it for what it is, just an opinion, but I would not do that to my cayman. Enjoy such a great car as your first car -- and eventually upgrade it to a S model. It's a really wonderful car and drives great. The NOS shot will do more harm than good IMHO.

be happy you are a teenager with a Porsche and chase girls not higher hp cars, that can come later with a different car. Its not worth messing with the car you have. if really unhappy trade it in for a muscle car.

Very true indeed. Being a strong muslim, I thank god everyday for what i've got. Really, i was shooting for a honda accord 2-door stick shift, the car came as a surprise lol.

But to help explain why sir, is because i'm a major car enthusiast. i've been playing racing games since i was 4 yrs old and started driving stick shift at age 13 in the middle east lol. I love going to the track and autocrossing, and something that i shouldn't be too proud about: Highway runs. I don't care about the girls or any of that stuff, i can get that on my own. The driving is for passion, i just love it.

I'll definitely keep you updated. I don't plan on going trigger happy with it as i love my car deeply lol.

You know what, it's truly a good point, and im definitely keeping that in mind as i research this a little more. Thanks man.

I don't think nitrous is your answer. You want something to keep up with higher powered cars for more extended runs, right? When you're doing these "highway runs" you're running pretty fast for some time, right? Nitrous just gives you a squirt of power. Stay on it for long and you'll quickly deplete the tank. If you were doing 1/4 mile drag runs nitrous would help, but for highway runs I don't think it's going to do much for you. The other guys would get ahead and then you'd go .... squirt.... and catch up for a bit, but then they'd just get ahead again until you squirted again.

You need SUSTAINED power. There are three ways you could get that - get a different car, swap in a bigger engine, or upgrade to a turbo. All of those options are a LOT more expensive than a 75 HP shot of nitrous. Personally I wouldn't bother with an engine swap. Used Porsche prices are in the dumper right now. I'd sell the car and then buy a used Boxster S. The price difference may only be around $5K or so, and you'd get reliable, sustained power that will help you to keep up!

Also, are you dropping it a gear when doing these runs? You should NOT be in your highest over drive gear to wring the most power out of your car.

the car you have can is great for twisties, autocross and short technical tracks, worst for you however is highway runs is biggest weakness. also NOS is really short lived so still may not help want you want, the risk benefit ratio is not in NOS's favor get your buddies to show up at an autocross!!

Another thing, Show up at a autocross event? We do show up, although you live in California, and i'm in Illinois lol. Come down to Chicago and we'll go for a run.

Hhhhmmm I like the way you think. Tell you what, I'm looking at a 2002 911 Carrera right now for $26,900 with 29,000 miles on the odometer. Dad is considering letting me trade for the boxster. Think it's a good idea? Ooooo and did i mention it's red?

Absolutely that's a good idea if you want more power for highway runs and to keep up with your friends. I've got a 2000 Boxster S but I also have a 2003 Carrera 4S. There's no question that the Boxster is better on twisty roads, it can out handle my C4S. However, for upper end power the Carrera (320 HP) is pretty amazing. Cruising at 70 MPH all I have to do is drop it down into 4th gear and the car will accelerate up to 130 MPH in seconds! I've played a bit on the highways and just this month have totally blown away Mustang GT's, a Mercedes AMG beast, modified Eclipse GST, and modified S2000. Your friends will have a very tough time keeping up with you, especially since the Carreras are built for higher speeds. Mine feels rock solid at 150 MPH and most drivers can't even go that fast!

I'd just try to get the most horsepower you can for your money. Try to step up at least to the 3.6L 320 HP engine and avoid the cheaper 3.4L 300 HP engines. Maybe talk Dad into springing $45K for a nice Twin Turbo!!!

gotta admit a 996 aint going to beat many people on "highway" runs either!!
Porsches are not drag cars they are track cars. you must get your competition on your best turf not theirs.

As for a C4S being outhandled by a boxster

Bro, I've hit 150mph in my boxster on the highways too, it's just a matter of how quick i can get up there lol, and daddy isn't gonna dish out 45k for another car for me, i've already got a 645ci i drive for the winter, it's got ample power, and since parents only bought it for me to drive for a year or so, so it's leaving soon , thats why I'm so sceptical about the boxster lol i need something just a little faster
