I am starting the process for possibly buying a used Boxster S, which may get traded in on a used Boxster Spyder in say 2 years.

It needs to have warranty remaining or at least be CPO'able.

When did the current generation Boxster S come out and how is it better than the previous generation?

When did the generation before the current ones come out?

Any thing to look out for from a reliability standpoint?

I will mostly use the car during the warmer weather months, but will use it regularly when I can. It will be kept in the mountains at fairly high elevation (8000 feet) so I will have lots of curves to have fun on.

Is it realistic to accomplish this in the $25,000 territory?

The 987 model started in 2005. You might be able to find an 05 S in the 25K price range.

 

for 25k? where? lol i see boxster s's 2005s usually going for about 30k or 29 at the least.

You'd be very lucky to find a car under warranty for 25k. I'd be extremely cautious about a 987 in that price range. Be sure to have a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic. It's worth it's weight in gold.

2005's and some 2006's have Intermediate Shaft Failures, which means you get to install a new engine. A $ 20 part causes massive engine failure. $ 10K for a new short block or thereabouts. So personally, I'd not buy an '05 unless and perhaps not an early model 06.

To get to your price point, you're going to have to go back a few years to a 2002 or 2003, possibly an 04. That or get a Honda S2000.

 

You should be able to get an 03 or 04 for that price, you will have to shop carefully!

 

Really? are the '05-'06 worse than earlier Boxsters?

 

Supposedly improvements were made to the Boxsters in late 06 with stronger bearings to try to prevent the dreaded Intermediate shaft failure issue. Hopefully its working out as Porsche just ranked No. 1 in reliability and I believe that the cars involved in the study were about 3 years old.

$25k for a used Boxster of the 987 family is pretty rare. You'd be getting into a 02-04 for that pricing. I'd be careful with the 986 models as they don't feel nearly as solid as the 987. I'd splurge and get a Spyder
