New Wheels - Downsizing
My tires finally needed replacing, down to the wear indicators. I have a 2010 GTS with the factory 21" wheels. Now the dilemma was do I just replace the worn tires, or for almost the same price go one size smaller to 20" wheels and tires. The selection of 21" tires is pretty limited and they are about twice the cost of a 20" tire. My Cayenne is a daily driver so longer wear was more important than max performance. So I decided to go with the 20" wheels/tires, this way I can replace the worn tires, I still have the 21" wheels if I ever wanted to go back to them, or I could sell them. I wanted to try a different style and I kind of like the Turbo II wheels. ECS had a pretty good deal on some Alzor replica Turbo II style wheels (20x9.5). I matched them up with some Yokohama Prada Spec-X in 275/40-20. The Yoko's are a little narrower but the overall diameter is very close. Got new TPMS sensors and valves, got everything mounted. I still think the 21" wheels look better, but the 20's are ok and I am happy with them. A couple of things regarding the new wheels, the rim edge protrudes out past the tires rim guard, so watch those curbs. Also I noticed that they had to use a lot more lead to balance the replicas compared to the OEM wheels, guess that's why they are so much cheaper.
OEM 21" wheels.
New Yoko on left, Bald OEM tire (Yoko) on the right. The OEM is about an 1" wider.
Alzor 20" wheels on left, OEM 21's on right.

Yeah I need to have the alignment checked, but don't Cayenne's have more camber in the rear from the factory and that causes the inside tread to wear faster, and so that is normal wear?

And for you suspension guru's out there, regarding the rear camber, if more is set at the factory for performance reasons will having it reset to have less camber (and a more even tire wear) be a safety issue or performance issue? Like I said it is a daily driver, never plan on tracking it, so will I lose just a little rear cornering grip, or will it be a huge change and possibly cause a unsafe condition handling wise?

Looks nice!
I may have gone the other direction though...up to 22" with 285/35/22 tire.
Cost of wheels/tires is about the same as 20" & again much better than 21"

Hey thanks. It was a hard decision because I like the OEM 21" wheels. But the previous owner had scuffed the 21" wheels and they needed refinishing, this factored into my decision to go for 20's and then have the 21's refinished and if the 20's don't work out I can go back to the 21's.

Looks great and it will make the ride better (more forgiving at least) with the /40 sidewalls. For practicality and function on 4x4 SUV's, the biggest wheel you would need is 20" and as much sidewall as possible.
