could be a broken sensor wire. But the dust where you are may cause more wear

Depends on your driving style and your geographic location, I went through my first set of factory front pads at 20K or so and just recently changed both front and rear at the 37.5k mark... I used factory replacement pads. Pagid's were on the car and we replaced them with factory Brembo's from the dealer parts counter, the second set were Pagids. Work was done at my pal's shop and we changed the sensors each time... The pads at the dealer were about $150ish for the front pads and less than $100 for the rear pads don't remember wether that was the list or the shop prices... I didn't try any aftermarket pads since I didn't know of anyone that had... my truck may get driven a little bit aggressively every once in a while and my pal said go with stock for now until he hears feedback on the other stuff and as a Porsche owner himself I went a long with it...

Is that $300 or $3000?
FYI, my dealer quoted me $1800 for front pads and rotors.

The pads are about $100 for the fronts, and you can buy them online. New sensor wires and hardware add another $50. At 20k miles I'm sure the Rotors are fine. This is a 45min DIY job. Check renntech for the instructions.

I find it amazing so many people are willing to just blow off the min spec of rotors, I have probably done 100+ brake jobs on Cayennes and i can remember 1 time there was enough material to pad slap it, and it was only the rears, if i remember my specs correctly you only have 4mm of wear from new to min spec, so you need to have at least 2mm left to not fall under min spec on your rotors... Do you really want to take the risk with your brakes... And to just ASSUME that someone else's will be fine because they have only 20k miles??? They acutally only had 20K Kms, and they are pretty aggressive on the brakes to trip the light that quick, so i would venture that they are actually at min spec.

YMMV

No, the Deuche is right, you should check the rotor diameter (also covered in the DIY). Then make your own decision. On the fronts some might be more conservative. On the rears, I wouldn't worry so much. Of course if he's done over 100 cayenne brakes I'm not sure why he's guessing on the specs. It's also a little suspect that with all that experience he doesn't offer ANY help as far as instructing members on the proper way to check rotor thickness, tools needed, etc. However, I'm sure he'd be happy to charge $3 grand to do it for you!

The Deuche... real mature So because i dont memorize EVERY spec i come across i'm suspect??? I dont claim to know everything, but i am smart enough to know where to find it!!! I dont do brakes EVERY day, not to mention it varies from Cayennes to Sports cars. Why would i offer assitance as how to check something like rotor thickness if the OP didnt ask??? I would be more than happy to explain it. I just find it amazing that people so easily dispense information when they dont have a damn clue. I am all for joe blow doing his own work, thats how i started, but i just really dont understand the whole risk=reward in this situation... But i do agree that $3000 is ridiculous thats about $1000 more than we charge...

That is definatly the exception and not the rule, I have also seen a 2002 Boxster with 40K and original front tires with about %40 tread, so should i run around telling every 986 owner to expect 40k out of front tires???

Before I get flamed as well, we did use a micrometer, (hope i did spell it right) and my rotors were within 1mm of spec and I decided since I was going to try the EBC's in the next few months for dust reduction at that point I would change my rotors....
