So I'm on my way home from Geneva NY yesterday on Rt 17 traveling with a pack of about 5 cars, me being the last one in the pack. The speed limit is 65mph and we are all doing around 80mph. I figured since I was the last one in the pack I had nothing to worry about, all of a sudden we see a state trooper and everybody slams on their brakes, sure enough out of all 5 people I get pulled over and get a speeding ticket for 80 in a 65. My questions is; does anyone know if DMV points will carry over to NJ. I don't mind paying the fine, but I really don't want my insurance to go up, and I'm not about to drive 4 hours up there to court to fight it.

i know that if you have a NYS license and get a ticket in another state (including within the tri-state area) points are not added to your record.
so i would assume that it would be the same the other way

almost the same thing happened to me last sunday in LA. I was 2nd in a pack of 3, in the 2 lane on the 405 at 6:30am....doing 80, right along with traffic....state trooper...flew up and picked me out of the group and gave me the ticket.....i know i was targeted....
Thats great news!! I don't really care about the fine, I just don't want my insurance to go up. I guess that's one of the few down sides to having the nicest car in a line of traffic, cops always pick us Porsche owners out first.
Usually the last car in the pack is traveling the fastest. I would not waste the money on speedlaw or an attorney until you went to see if or what reduction would be offered without an attorney.
I was busted for 80 in a 65 north of lake george about a month and a half ago. I plead not guilty through the mail and then asked for a 'reduction in offense' due to a perfect driving record. They came back with 'failure to obey a traffic signal' (2points instead of 4) and a much lower fine.
Yes points transfer to NJ. Only 2 points transfer no matter how many points your NY offense was.

I received the same "reduction" from a State Trooper. 70 in a 55, but he wrote me up for "failure to obey posted sign" or something of that nature.
The joke was that although the fine itself was ~$80.00, NY State slaps on another ~$80 for a court/admin fee or some such nonsense...nice revenue generator
Even though you are a New Jersey driver, you can still acquire points and penalties for violations committed in other states. New Jersey is a member of two compacts that enforce this policy.
The Driver License Compact
Consists of 45 states and the District of Columbia. States not included are Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee and Wisconsin
Members in this compact exchange all violation information. Out-of-state moving violations are worth two points. For example, if you receive a speeding ticket in Florida, you will get two points on your New Jersey driving record for that violation
The Nonresident Violator Compact
Consists of 44 states and the District of Columbia. States not included are Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon and Wisconsin
Assures nonresident motorists the same rights and privileges as residents
Nonresident drivers have due process protection and cannot be detained out-of-state
Requires drivers to fulfill the terms of traffic citations received in member states or face the possibility of license suspension in their home state
Does not apply to parking or standing violations, highway weight limit violations and violations of Hazmat transportation laws
NY points don't transfer over, but looks like NJ assesses 2 points administratively.
