Interesting.
From a mechanical engineering perspective, a traditional piston combustion engine is highly complex, heavy, and breathtakingly inefficient. Two of the three, engineers are trained to avoid at all costs but yet we trudge on with the design.

Wankel Rotaries were much lighter, less complex, and had some efficient gains intrinsic to its design.

Jet Turbine engines are probably the most efficient of all the combustion engine types and provide the most power per specific energy unit of fuel used.

Something in the middle or a blended concept must be there. Maybe this is it?
