That is pretty funny!!

So, I know a lot about wine, but have never heard of Michael Phelps as winery before. That's not to say one doesn't exist, but...

There is a JOSEPH Phelps. If it is that Phelps, then we might be able to get somewhere!

1998 was not considered a good year in many places, the least of which was the Napa Valley. 3 liters...big bottle. The couple 750's I have left from that vintage are in despirate (SP?) need to be consumed. You may have a little time left before it completely turns, but find a couple friends and drink it now. Waiting doesn't help with this vintage.

Cheers,
Chris

So, if you have seen your bottle in the $300 range, I am assuming it is the Insignia (which it will say on the front label). If that is the case...the last time I tasted it (out of a magnum) was about 9 months ago. It seemed to be holding relatively strong, but will probably need to be drunk in the next year to year and a half or so. Of course, hopefully it was lying around in a closet or other cooler, darker space and not on top of the refidgerator.

And, yes, 1998 was one of the poorer years on record. But! ...there is always a but isn't there?! Some of the higher end wines have the fruit and wine making team that can make even a wretched year, palatable!

So open it up at a celebration or holiday party or...

Of course, my mother always said (with bubbly in the fridge at all times), "Even laundry night can be a celebration!!"

Cheers,
Chris

There's no way that a double magnum of '98 Insignia would sell for just $300. Larger format bottles sell for more than their equivalent 750s (in this case 4 bottles of Insignia), as they're more scarce and the larger quantity means the wine will age more slowly/gracefully if stored properly.

If your '98 Joseph Phelps double mag was stored in proper conditions, it should be drinking fine but should be consumed anytime you care to. A 750ml of the '98 Phelps would definitely be past its peak and should be consumed pretty quickly.

djmrsulu-

I agree that $300 would be low for a double mag of Insignia. However 1998 was an off year, and any other Phelps in a double mag size wouldn't fetch that price. That being said, with limited research, I couldn't find anything larger than a mag with a low price at $225.

Out of curiosity, porshaah, is it the Insignia? If not, what is it? Either way, it should be a nice bottle!

Cheers,
Chris

Stuff gets priced all the time that's out of whack to what it's truly worth, whether by amateurs or professionals. I agree I'd never pay $300 for a double mag of '98 Phelps, but you never know if someone might throw down the money for the name and size no matter how poor of a vintage.

I've noted that even in bad years, Insignia will typically be at least alright and will be able to cellar for a decent period of time (esp. in the larger formats). If you could indeed find a $300 double mag of the '98 Insignia, it's definitely worth picking up.

A sante!!

+1....Large formats generally due age better than their 750 counterparts....problem w/large format though is the drinking....you need 4 people to finish one...minimum...not like you can open it and leave it for a few days.
I also agree with the fellow who mentioned superior vineyards can do wonders with off vintages....did a verticle of Montelena starting from 98 to 01....while the 98 was the runt of the litter...had it been consumed without the others it was okay...better than most.
To the OP DRINK THE WINE!!!...enjoy it....our cellars are not supposed to be like museums....I get little joy from saying I have such and such. I enjoy drinking them with family and friends.
Regards
S
