I am a few years out from getting my first Porsche. I am set on the GT3, but just wanted to gather some wisdom from the people who already went thru this debate.
GT3RS is about 20k more, but it has more standard features. In the end the price isn't THAT much different. And RS being a more rare version, I'd think it'll retain resale value better in the long run as well.
So why did you guys decide to get the GT3 over GT3RS?

I was able to by my first 07 GT3RS 'pre-owned' with 2K miles at the same price as a new, well-equipped GT3, so I went for it. It's been downhill since then.

I did buy an RS, I think availability was probably the biggest factor. When the RS was released, the economy was normal so the dealers and flippers could get big mark ups making most people think twice about GT3 or RS. At the height some RS's were marked up close to $100,000 over MSRP. Performance is very similiar so GT3 was a viable choice. As for resale, there were only a small number of 2008 MY RS's, but resale is not like it was 18 months ago. New model and economy big factors.

If you were a potential first time purchaser at that time, most of the RS's were already allocated to existing Porsche customers. If you could have gotten one, (as mentioned above), dealers were asking anywhere from $50K, and up from there.
wow those are some ridiculous markup prices!!
i love cars, but in my mind, no cars deserve those hideous "fair market adjusted value" so called markups. if it's priced that way from the manufacturer, that's fine, but not dealer added BS.
and also i guess i'm more used to the current market condition than i thought. lol
i haven't heard of markups for awhile that i forgot they existed. haha
Yes the 997 GT3RS's were more limited in # of units. It was hoped that this would have met something for re-sales BUT no.
This crap economy in general has changed all this. Re-sale prices have savagely tanked. Forget the idea of holding value.
I've seen 997GT3RS's will very low miles (< 2000 miles) going for $100K to $110K. Things have changed.
Had considered selling my 07 RS a few months back and after getting insulting offers refused to sell. Will keep and mod it.
btw the 2010 GT3RS is driving me NUTZ!!

if you aren't a multiple porsche owner, most like you will not be able to get an RS at msrp. and even multiple porsche owners, ppl with over 30 p car in last 5 years, may not necessarily get one at msrp.

Well..I have an '08 RS viper green and I am adding a '10 RS. I love them.
Performance between the regular GT3 gen 1 and the RS is almost identical and Walter Rohrl was quoted as saying there is zero difference except for the most expert and advanced drivers.(I am not one of them. I just like the car.)
I have seriously considered a RS when I got my 997.1 GT3 two years ago. The reasons I didn't get it were 1) ridiculous mark-ups, 2) same HP as GT3, 3) US spec RS is NOT the same as ROW RS (no clubsport option, i.e., no roll cage, no Euro GT3 seats, no plastic rear window), 4) wide body, LWFW and CF RS wing do not justify the mark-ups to me.
