Difference in premium cost between E46 M3 and E46 330ci

Just because I was curious, I asked my Progressive rep to compare the two vehicles for the same coverage. The M3 came out to $1,000 more per year. Convertible M3 was $200 more per year than coupe. These may be inflated due to my high premium (I have two tickets on file), but still considerable.

Old thread....

Years ago (2002), I had a Dinan S/C'd E36 BMW. Clean record, multiple cars, homeowners, 33 YO married and my insurance went to $2200/year for the M3. same year 328i was half. The insurance companies look at the "loss average" for the model car and at that point, M3's had gotten cheap enough for kids to buy and wrap them around trees on a regular enough basis to raise the whole pool of owners rates. I advise a lot of people that are looking for M3's, to buy a 330 and put a S/C, brake upgrade and suspension upgrade and they will have a better handling, faster car that will save a ton of insurance.

Same thoughts for my DD. I have an 05 Outback XT (turbo 5 speed). I have some mods that will smoke any stock or slightly modded STi, but this car costs less than half what an STi would cost to insure.
