Word from Car and Driver's German correspondent is that the bullish Italian automaker is strongly considering re-entering the hardcore SUV segment. The brand's last effort into such uncharted territory brought us the Hummer-esque LM002. (picture above) If the machine does make it past the planning stages, it will reportedly be based on the platform shared by the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, but probably with a powertrain more suitable for Lamborghini use – hopefully that means a V12, as was the case with the LM002.

in-officially confirmed for 2012, platform will be the Q5:

The new SUV – dubbed LM00X – is more likely to get the new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that will debut in the Audi S7 next year, tuned to give in excess of 550bhp.
That will be good for a 0-62mph sprint time of less than four seconds, and means the car will easily outpace the Cayenne Turbo S. Although the Cajun’s three-door layout will be retained, the LM00X’s styling will be inspired by the brand’s supercars, making it instantly recognisable as a member of the Lamborghini family.
The LM00X is set to cost well over £100,000 when it goes on sale in 2012.
