You jump out of bed and grab your gun, and maybe there is a scuffle or maybe he startles you or somthing and you end up shooting the kid and killing him or doing serious damage. Is that really somthing you want to happen, is breaking and entering really worth getting killed for. Maybe if you had a bat instead of a gun then the kid would only be injured, broken leg or similar, rather than dead. Also if someone really wanted to break in and do harm or kill you, they would probably shoot at you before you shot back.

I am not trying to say i condone breaking and entering or home invasion, and i know that if someone breaks in you are going to want to protect yourself and your family, but there is a much higher chance of someone getting shot when all they wanted to do was steal something small to get money and not hurt anyone.

Many people steal and do break ins for many reasons, a lot are because they are young and stupid or want/need easy fast money, and its a pretty small thing to be shot over.

Anyways thats my 2c. Maybe living in Aus i have a different perspective on life.
You're sympathizing for criminals. I suggest you see a psychiatrist.

People always say that, but what if the intruder is carrying a loaded shotgun too?? Racking your shotgun will get them ready to shoot at you as well. I think I prefer the element of surprise with a double barrel shotgun.

And if I miss with the first shot I get to fire a second shot right away.

If someone is stupid enough to break into my house, they are going to get shot twice in rapid succession (at least twice), regardless of their reasons or intentions, or age for that matter. I don't know if they are armed, there for my money, or to rape my gf, but I refuse to wait around and ask them. And without kissing my own ass by saying this, I am one hell of a shot; it is an integral part of what I do for a living....

Wow, thanx for all the advice. I read every post. Funny, but when I was single home security never crossed my mind. Heck, i cant remember how many times I just left all the doors unlocked (maybe too lazy to use locks)...Those of you with spouses and or kids, like me, will think totally different about the subject.

-motion detector lights, check.
-dog (Lab/Sheppard mix) {rescued from death row in pound}, check
-video cameras (maybe next, dont know) I feel confident on what I have in place now.
-AK-47, & FMJ ammo Locked up and ready for zombie attack!, check.

I recommend Home Security System but only if you have a good unit in your area. There are a lot of rich people in San Marino, so I think that there are also a good and efficient security companies.

But in all seriousness, I've heard good things about this:

"It is better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six."
