First an alarm system, believe it or not they work. Depending on the area you live, police response times can be amazing or not so good.
If your afraid of an imminent threat, such as someone trying to hurt your family by breaking and entering I'd also install motion sensors around your house. These can get rather annoying if animals run across your yard, but if your in Los Angeles like me that's not too likely to happen.
A camera system, with a TV inside your wife's bedroom so she can monitor the place.
Confrontation happens, firearms are great but if your wife is not able to use a firearm then I suggest a taser ( one that fires from a gun )
You can set up a system where if your alarm goes off, say by a person breaking a window, EVERY light in your house turns on ( very useful if an actual robbery or homicide is about to take place )
A trained dog is amazing, and is awsome if she goes on walks or when she goes to the store etc.
1. Very bright exterior lights with motion sensors
2. Paintball gun (desert eagle style / uses small c02 / looks real / 300 psi at close range can deter without killing / easy to buy / legal for you to shoot on your prop so you can train your wife).
+1 for the dog. But it doesn't have to be a trained attack dog. When looking at houses to break into most will pass on a house with a dog. Don't think anyone is coming near my place - got a pit bull, a rotweiller and a Belgian shepherd. But then again, I live in a very nice neighborhood.
It is amazing the deterrence a barking dog will provide.
a good dog and a drunken redneck friend whos married at least twice. that way when your out of town she can call him say someone is hurting the dog and he'll be over before she hangs up the phone. and he'll be gone as soon as the guy is taken care of bc he knows better than piss off another woman
We use POST as they have their own dedicated monitoring system as opposed to SM whom "leases". Also utilize a 16ch survellience system, keep the landscape lighting on until dawn, and also have motion detector spot lights. Welcome to the neighborhood, and congrats on the new edition to the family.
Kimber makes a really slick gel pepper spray. It' has the benefit of going directly where it's shot and it packs a 2 shot punch so if you miss you get another round. It's basically fired similar to a gun or taser. We use it when we take the dog for a walk and have one in each car.
I just bought a house, and thought about that recently
I had security bars/dors installed (they are custom, and look NICE... not too jail-like)
I am also a fan of recreational shooting, so I obviously have a shotgun and pistol.
I love dogs, so I am going to get a Doberman or Great Dane soon.
Last but not least, I am a fan of Krav Maga (it's a great workout, and gets you as ready as you can be for a REAL street fight)
covering ALL the bases is best... or as much as possible is good too
knowing how to shoot is more important than owning firearms; liking your equipment is important... I love my Remington 870 with the 3-shot extension, pistol grip, laser, and lights... I like the XD40 too, but not as much
again, practice with the firearms often, and have a plan of action
buy a BB gun, and practice in the house - make it realistic
am I taking this a bit far?

Home Security System is great.. I have them both @ my business and home. The response time is only a few minutes. The local police dept. is at your front door almost immediately. I usually activate it around dinner time... a few buttons activates & deactivates the system. I pay $28/month for my business and $35/month for home (different companies).
Home Security is great for PRE-crime... in other words, one hopes to prevent the crime/danger from occurring - once the alarm system is triggered, hopefully the threat disappear.
Security Camera Surveillance is more for POST-crime events. Once it's already taken place, video and recordings can help law enforcers capture the criminals.
Dogs are great too (that is, if you love them).
Armed weapons are always an option (just not my cup of tea, especially with kids around).
