Years and years ago I quit my job as a stockbroker after many years in the grind and fished for a living for 6 years. Got some great press out of it including an offer to be on Oprah.

My favorite tournament is the BBC or Bahamas Billfish Championship. We fish 5 tournaments over 10 weeks, mainly in the Abacos. These are where the true ballers play. I fish against Huyzenga, Bacardi, etc. and the format is simple. Biggest fish of the week takes the cash. Cold hard cash. Figure 80 boats at $14,000 for the calcutta, and you get one lucky guy walking away with a garbage bag with a million dollars in hundreds. Literally.

Biggest I ever won was a shade over 650K several years back in Marsh Harbour for a 600lb plus fish. Great times, really cool to see genuine big shots laid back and doing Jager shots with locals!

I have scaled back on the boats. Used to have a 55-65 foot Carolina boat built every couple years, fish it for a season and sell it the next year in FL. Get them built locally in the outer banks and you can usually fish for free for a year and pocket a hundrek K or so.

After my 8th ortho surgery I realized my back is shot and I just couldn't do it anymore...I now have a 31' Jupiter and a 20' striper jet boat. Dan, I have fished Murray, Hartwell, etc many times. The jet boat is perfect for giant stripers in the summer when they get way up in the rivers looking for the cool water. I have a Merc 240hp sportjet, which is a 250hp promax racing motor top end bolted to a Merc jet pump. With a 100 gallon livewell, 3 pumps and oxygen infusion, I can spend all day all by myself way way up in the rivers!

Here's the link to the BBC if anyone is interested. I don't know which tournaments I am fishing this year but if anyone is going to be down there shoot me a pm and we'll hook up down there!

http://www.bahamasbillfish.com/

Tom.
Hey Tom. I'm pretty impressed. You really have fished with the "heavyweights" of sportfishing in some pretty impressive boats.

Fishing for stripers in your sportjet sounds like fun. In my big tub of a boat, I really can't do the gun and shoot for top water schooling stripers. However, your boat sounds ideal for it.

Drop me a PM if you're ever fishing Lake Murray and we'll meet up for a drink on the lake.

love it..try to add pics......
Rampage makes pretty good boats. I had the distinct pleasure of negotiating for the purchase of Tred Barta's own 36 Rampage...the "Makaira" this past summer. He was quite a trip to talk to on the phone. He alternated between trying to shmooze me and cussing at me. Pretty . In the end, I decided this wasn't a good time to be buying a bigger boat and he ended up selling it to someone else.

post some pics of your 38!

Awesome catch! That looks like something I'd like to do. Can you give us a recommendation of where to go and where to stay? Is the fishing consistent year round for this type of fishing?

Docdan,

There is only ONE outfit I would go with and that's www.Amazontours.com They are the oldest operating outfit on the Rio Negro, largest tributary off the Amazon. The area that they have access to has given up not only the world record pea**** bass but several line class records as well.

Without a doubt the best time of the year to go is November. Season has just opened up, water levels are usually down and not only do you catch numbers but you catch big fish as well.

If you decide to go pm me and I can get you more details. I'm already booked to go back this next November.

Thanks for the info. This is has now officially made my short list of fishing destinations. Are pea**** as ferocious as their reputation? What kind of gear are you using and what are the fights like?

Thanks,

Dan

Pea****s, pound for pound, are the strongest fighting fish in the world. When you get into a good section of river, you can easily catch 30, 40, 100 in a day. The bites are EXPLOSIVE! Did I mention that the majority are taken on topwater?

As far as tackle I use bass gear. Heavy bass gear, braided line and primarily topwater baits. I'm partial to Evergreen and Megabass rods, for reels you need stout reels with decent line capacity. Steez 100H's and Chronarchs work well. Lures I have found that Hi Roller topwaters work the best.
