I remember hearing that it was some kind of tax benefit or something if you keep trading up in size? Or maybe i'm just crazy. Just curious as it always seems almost every boat you see in a marina is for sale.
This is a sickness that my family and friends jokingly refer to as "boatitus." This condition affects all people who acquire boats within the first week of ownership. The symptoms are envy of larger boats and a deep inner desire to sell ones boat and get a larger one.

More so than anything else, bigger is better with boats. You get a larger cabin, better seakeeping ability (this varies though), and you penis grows 1 inch for every 20 feet in length that your boat is. My family's boat is 56 feet, therefore i get an extra 3 inches (you always round up).

There are no tax advantages I am aware of, except that you lose an insane amount of money every time you buy a new boat. The reason that you see so many boats for sale is the aforementioned boatitus and the fact that it is difficult to find the right buyer at the right price. There are many reasons for it and I am too lazy to type it out right now. For instance, our boat has been on the market for a year now. We enjoy it and use it often but if someone shows up and offers the right amount of money we will sell it tomorrow.

Furthermore, this season has been quite dead due to the high fuel costs (this helps explain more boats for sale). While this seemingly wouldn't matter to someone who owns a multi-million dollar boat when you burn as much as they do it starts to add up. As a reference point, our boat which is 56 feet with twin CAT 3406 (800hp each) burns 70 gallons per hour at cruise. In the few short trips thus far this season we have burned 3/4 of our 800 gallon capacity. The speedboats in this thread will burn much more than that and they need special fuel which costs more also.

Thanks for the input TD, I have read about the OL boats and they do look awesome. Once I get to that point I will take a close look at both.
