Helmets

I am a new rider. I just picked up a new bike and I can't wait to start riding. I need to buy some gear first though. I have everything covered except for the helmet.

I am not willing to put a price on my head so cost is not necessarily a concern however I don't want to get something that is overboard.

There seems to be a wide range of helmets available and the cost seems to vary as well. The cost from a HJC to Shoei to Arai is crazy...

I researched their websites but they all seem pretty good to me. Any recommendations as to which helmet and why?

I have always been partial to Arai and Shoei. You cannot go wrong with either brand. Just buy one that fits your head correctly.

Ride safe.

I wore a top-of-line HJC for two years, and then switched to a Shoei X-11. The difference is like night and day; much quieter, better fitting, and cooler when riding.

You really do get what you pay for...I recommend Shoei or Arai, whichever fits your headshape better.

Just my $0.02, take it for what it's worth.

I have been riding for two years. I started with a cheap icon helmet and then went all out with a shoei X-11. Its a big difference in fit, comfort, and aerodynamics. The X-11 hands down has really good aerodynamics and will not try to rip your head off with heavy gusts, while my icon helmet would jerk my head around at high speeds.

Shoei or Arai. They're both good.

It boils down to what fits you best. I tried on a bunch of different helmets at the Chicago motorcycle show before settling on a Suomy Spec-1R Extreme. For me, the Suomy fit best and was light weight.

Like others have said, you can't go wrong with Arai, Shoei, AGV, Shark, etc.

fyi -

You can't go wrong with Arai or Shoei; thats what I've always worn.

However, if you want an inexpensive lid try Scopion - I tried on on & was
totally shocked how nice they are given the low price.
IMHO, as nice as a top-end $700 Arai Corsair or $600 X11 Shoei

Way better than say an HJC

I agree. Honestly, i've never tried a shoei, arai or suomy because of the price, but I went from an HJC to a scorpion and I was in love. For a new company they make very nice comfortable, breathing, and cleanable helmets.
There's another company that makes a helmet with the bluetooth integrated in it...if I were to get anothter helmet, i would definitely check them out.

I've got a Caberg with the flip up front and integral pop-down sun screen. Had to modify the chin, since apparently Italians don't have them. There are other brands that have those features, though, and would fit better. Nice to consider for daily riding.

Had a Shoei before and it fit nicely and was quiet, but started getting looser and noisier over time. I don't worry much about sound, though, since I'll always ride with either ear plugs or in-ear headphones.

yeah, ear plugs are a must. Recent research says that you'll lose your hearing a lot sooner....and sport rider even had some readers writing in that were losing their hearing in their 30's....
