New High Octane Gas In Los Altos

On my run up Hwy 9 down skyline and out through Woodside last Thurs I picked up 100 at the Gas Station on Woodside road: $5.89 per gallon. The station at Rancho Shopping center in Los Altos is now $7.49 for 100.

Someone told me that VP (perhaps everyone) uses Toluene to boost the Octane and that is bad for the fuel system. Is this true?

I wouldn't suggest adding toluene to today's fuels. I haven't read up much on TNT lately but I beleive the toluene was the stabilizer that allowed nitroglyceren to be packed much more safely.

I suppose it can be viewed as a retardant since octane increase is really nothing more than a method of reducing pre-detonation in high-compression engines. Personally, I wouldn't add toluene since it's unknown (to me) what it might do in the long run to the many of the seals it will touch (i.e. injector seals, fuel pump seals, fuel pressure regulator O-rings, etc.)

A message to all. The VP station in Los Altos has changed hands and will become a 76. However there are 1700 gallons of 100 octane still in the tank- last time I checked. The new owner is trying to get rid of what he has since he will not be carrying 100 octane once that \bit is gone.

However you can order a 55 gallon drum of whatever grade fuel you want from the station, so that is another option if you want your gas "close to home" (read: in your garage).

Would the new owner be willing to get rid of it at less than the posted $7.49 per Gal? The Station on Woodside road is last time I checked $5.49 per Gal for 100

A friend of mine got it for 6.xx a gallon, so the new owner is making deals.

The old owner of the station actually had the price as high as $7.79/gal, which was out of this world.

That station in the Rancho Shopping center does not carry 100 octane anymore. The 100 octane it had was from when it was under the VP brand, it is now a 76.
However, if you are interested in just about any "flavor" of race gas, you can ask at that station about getting a barrel ordered.

Good question. Did you ever get an answer? The higher octane gas alone will not do much. You need to reprogram the car's ecu to get the extra benefit of the high octane gas. Only problem is .....now your car is set to run its best with that type of gas.

It's an expensive upgrade because you can never be sure you'll be able to find 100 octane.

Get the buggy used to 100 and it will not run right with anything less.

Your car is hot enough, Chester. You don't need anything else!!!

Even with a stock DME you will see SOME improvement with higher octane.

I suspect that the stock tune pulls timing when running CA 91 octane, and that you can see improvement up to 95-96 octane. Just a WAG.

If you put 8 gal of 100 into 8 gal of 91 you will have 16 gal of 95.5. Give it a try.

Oh, DO NOT get on it until the DME has adapted. Especially after refilling with 91after a tank of higher octane. Like 5-10 miles.

There is a slight improvement with higher octane and a stock ECU but not enough I would thingk to warrant paying $6-$7 a gallon.

I picked up some 92-93 at a Union 76 in San Juan Baptista once and could feel a slight difference.

I doubt you'd feel more than "slight" however.

Went to the Sunol on 680 toward Livermore about 2 weeks ago to pick some up and only saw 104 or 110 pump, I forgot which. Price was 5.XX/ gal. Can you get between 93 and 100 there because I didn't see it at the pump. Can we get an update on prices at the Woodside station please?

Just went to the 76 on Alameda tonight. $6.299 a gallon for 100 oct.
