0W40 to 5w40

Hi all

Need some advice.
Car is hit approx 60,000 miles.
I notice that increasingly between services im having to top off the oil more & more. (maybe 3 Quarts in the span of 6,000 miles)

Im wondering on my nest service, instead of using the Mobil 1 0w40 im always using, to jump to 5w40 instead.

What are your thoughts on this?

you can try it... I have done the same switch on my 911 because I really wasn t using it in sub zero weather. I doubt it will help the usage. Check the book, it will probably give you the choice.

I'm not sure, but I thought the specified 0W40 had some particular additives that Porsche requires.

The 5w40 will not make any measurable difference as the 0 or 5 relate to the oil viscosity when cold, the 40 relates to the oil viscosity when hot. The oil will be at the same viscosity "40" when hot with either oil.

Paul
I was thinking that most of the wear is on cold start. Hence going to 5w40.
Though i found another Mobil 1 oil with the A40 approval, its a 5w50.

Lots of porsche owners have switched to this.
I am going to try this.

Does anyone else use 5W50 here?

Actually it is claimed that a lighter wt first number oil gets pumped faster to parts on start up. Your manual will tell what wts of oil are recommended by Porsche for your engine, a higher second number ie w50 if recommended would have a tendency to seal better than w40 at the valve stem seals and piston rings. If your engine is not leaking and is otherwise in normal condition this is where the oil gets to the combustion chamber/s and is consumed. I see you have a turbo, the oil could also be going by the turbo seals which can have many causes such as a partially clogged air filter creating higher vacuum on the intake side.
