Yeah, it's like the saying goes..."if someone wants something badly enough, their morals goes straight out the window." That's the unfortunate truth of the matter these days. Digital images are easier to take.

How true! Check out my avatar, thats not even my dog and yet Its the avatar on all the online forums I'm subscribed to People ask me all the time if thats my dog, no answer. I used that as my avatar to get models to come without escorts for a while; "Cute puppy, Yea, I'll bring him along to the shoot so you can leave your man at home; OKAY ! DEAL"

Yes, but like car alarms, burglars would rather pass on the car with one than risk breaking into the car with one.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I was also wondering the status of this rule. I have watermarks on all my images, personally and professionally.

I can understand if you can't post an image using the IMG tags, but what about using the URL tags (a link to the image)?

there is a pretty simple solution here...especially if you are a pro...I believe there is case law precedent for intellectual material that was posted to the internet by the author and was considered to be published and public domain....if you have an image you don't want to lose...don't post it in a public forum...nes pas?

I think my question got a bit lost in the discussion. In the vbulletin forum software, you can have "IMG" tags that show an image, and "URL" tags that will only show a link to the image (or any other web page).

I can understand not using the IMG tags so the image doesn't show in the thread, but what about using URL tags. The image won't show unless someone clicks on it, and then it takes them to another page with the image, leaving 6speed.

It's a link to the image vs the image showing up in the thread.

Here's an example:

Correct. Illegality forms when someone REMOVES a copyright tag. If the original image is intact, and used in non-commercial, non-malicious, editorial context, and the photo was obtained from a public source, it is perfectly ok to use it.

Here's a good resource on some of the copyright cases claiming "fair use."
http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyrigh...pter9/9-c.html

After reading a lot of documents on this subject, I'm not really sure if an image publically sourced can be used without violation of a copyright. But what is more important is how all this works in the practicality of a court of law.

To be honest, I really could care less about the copyright debate. I'm trying to make sure I play by 6speed rules, and am just wondering if a link is ok vs an inline image.

a link is ok if it doesn't go to a commercial site...safer to just place the watermarked images in the photography section and then link to them...

The link would always be just as in my post above. Would that be satisfactory?
