the link should be to a photo not a site..if it is to a site and the site isn't selling something then it may or may not be ok...depends on the site...like I said most desireable is no watermarks or taggs, next best is to put them in the photography section and link to them there...third choice post a link and take your chances...I know that having rules where before there were none can take the fun out of it..for you and for me too...but hopefully in the long run it will be better for all...thanks for asking and helping...

I know how rules can be both positive and negative as I've had to set them in place on my own forum site. Thank you for helping clarify this issue for me.
I think the best option for me will be to link to a watermarked image like the link in my post above. Will this be in compliance with 6speed rules?

Samir, no Stanford University is not a commercial site and they are not openly selling anything...but if you link to a pro photographers home page or some other commercial sites homepage, then that is a problem

Reason: fix link
well, I am not thrilled about the website url being posted on the pic but it is not that offensive...I wouldn't object to that...
So using a link like that will be okay? I just want to verify before I post some of the images I've been wanting to.

I wanted to bring this issue up again because I really do think that this is an unfair rule. I think that for the most part, a person's name should be okay when used as a watermark in their images. Company names however I think is not okay when used. We should be allowed to "protect" our images outside of this section.
Is there someone we can talk to about this? Who created these rules anyways?

Yea I agree with you. I do want to protect my pictures from people who tend to copy my image and use it for ebay or anything. I have seen tons of pictures on ebay that are all the same because they aren't watermark. I won't want any of my pictures show up my any other website with out my permission.

this has been beaten to death...you can post your protected images here in the photography section and this section is part of this forum...if you want to post protected material elsewhere on this forum become a site sponsor
What I'd like to know if this topic has been "beaten to death" then by whom? It doesn't sound like any of us had a say in this matter. Only decided by those "above us." Aren't we the ones who have a "voice" in this matter because we people are the ones who provide content to this site.
guess what...those "above us" (above me too) own this forum and establish the rules that you agree to in tems of use...the rule was already relaxed to allow user name taggs if the user name is not a commercial name...you agreed with that in principal in our pm's and then immediately turned around and posted images with your professional name...non-sponsor professionals are not allowed to promote their businesses on 6speed and that includes pro photographers too...if you want to post your images outside the photography section with taggs then use atomic80 like you agreed to
A simple solution is to simply post a link to the image. That's what I'm doing.
As a forum owner, I know there are reasons to set rules and restrictions for members. Without the users, there is no content. But also without sponsors, there is no web site. There are costs to these web sites, and no one is getting rich. It's a delicate balance.

what about embedding the exif data in the border of the image frame? it also has my name in from the metadata that is embedded in the raw file from the camera?
