obviously that was a typo....since it's clear to everyone that nikon>canon!!!!
whatever you get (i'm obviously a nikon shooter, just see my sig for details on my kit), take some time to learn how to use the camera. you will be much better off in the long run if you master a few basics. both companies make great systems and are so far ahead of their competitors it's really a game where they are pushing each other and nobody else really matters.
i started with a d70 and an 18-70, and now look what i've accumulated! the 18-200 is a great all around lens. it sounds like the canon performs about how the nikon version does. eventually i got more 'pro' glass, but the 18-200 was a blast and i keep it for those times when i can only take one lens and i need the versatility of focal lengths.
RocC4S: I was in the same boat as you last month...I have never even thought about getting a DSLR until I saw a smoking deal on a Canon XSi. Body, 18-55 IS lens AND the 55-250 IS lens - price for both lenses and the body was about $685 US before tax (actually $873 CAD) - stellar price if you ask me
But yeah, seeing that deal started a whole downward spiral...Seeing a good deal on a new toy opened up the "guys and technological toys" flood gates...went from debating the XSi kit and the D90 w/ kit lens, and then the D90 and the 50D..
After handling the cameras and playing with the menu's I ended up going with the D90 body and the 18-200 VR lens...I couldnt be happier...what started as a hobby that was going to cost my just around $900 to get into (with the XSi kit) turned into a much more expensive one costing more than double LOL
One of the reasons for going with the D90 was because I liked how the way the menu system seemed more user friendly. Also, another major reason was the size factor. The 50D was significantly larger and heavier whereas the D90 felt more comfortable and lighter in my hand. I'll be using my Camera for travelling/vacation pictures a lot so I want something thats a little smaller and lighter that I wont get tired holding for hours on end. - My fiancee is a wee little 100lb 5'2 girl...and she is really into the whole photography thing too so I wanted to get something that would be comfortable for her to use too. The 50D just ended up being too bulky and heavy...
The 720p Video was also a plus for me - I like it because its just something that can come in handy if and when that time comes I need a vid cam - its a nice addition.
But it sounds like you have made your decision on the 50D which is one hell of a camera....enjoy and dont forget to post some of your money shots!

fyi - there seem to be deals to be had on the D90, Ritz has the D90 bosy plus a (Quantaray) 55-200mm non-VR lens for $899, I'm told Costco has a deal for $1100 with the two VR lens kit too.
I have owned a Nikon D70, D2H, D70 converted over to IR, and a currently have a D2X. I am biased towards Nikon's lenses, and equipment. Both companies are on the cutting edge. One of the other 6speeders had a good point as to what friends/collegues have. I find myself "borrowing" friends lenses as the need arises.
Go Nikon.

if i could offer some advice here--don't get a body as good as the d90 or 50d and handicap it with crummy glass. if you do i predict you will be dumping the above very quickly. i wouldn't get anything 'less' than the 18-200vr or canon equivalent in terms of quality, even for starters. the nikon 'consumer' grade lenses are ok but are not up to the resolution of the d90, and canon makes even worse low end lenses. you are better off imo getting the 18-200vr even if it costs a few hundred bux more than the 2 lens kit.
and if you are adventurous at all there are even better deals around on mint used gear...sites such as fredmiranda or nikonians, where i purchased my entire kit. i'd be more than happy to help if anyone's interested. most of the time i prefer to buy used, whether it's camera gear or cars...

I agree. SLRs are an expensive hobby, no matter which way you slice it. If you are not planning on investing in good glass, you are wasting time, as a good full featured point and shoot (like a Sigma DP1 or a Canon G10) will take a better photo than an SLR with bad glass. If you ARE planning on owning good glass, then get it right away, as getting crap glass "meanwhile" just means you are going to spend money twice. You can get a 24-105 used for a decent price (around $800 or so) and have fantastic glass. Hell, even a Tamron 17-50 will give you spectacular shots. Don't get "ok" glass. If "ok" is good enough, an SLR is nothing more than a waste of money.

I'm going with the 50D 18-200mm kit, hopefully that glass will suffice.
i think that's a great choice for starters!! post up some pix after you get it. but you've been warned--count on 'lens lust' kicking in pretty soon.....
hey guys, just got my first SLR, a Nikon D80, body only for only $506 brand new. Now it's lense shopping time... any assistance? My buddies all telling me to just get the Nikor 18 - 200... what do you guys think?
