Get the 18-200mm, you'll end up wanting it anyway so save yourself the time and cost of swapping around. I started with the 18-55mm, then the 18-135mm (or something like that) on my way to the 18-200mm.

absolutely get the 18-200vr for a first lens...great all around to learn with. you may move on eventually as i have, but i was very happy with the 18-200 and in fact still have mine for those situations where i can only take one lens and i need the reach.

and i'm not sure if you are into this, but mint used ones trade somewhere between $450-500 from what i can tell. if that might be of interest i might be able to help find one at one of the photo sites i hang out at...
