On the fence...Canon 50D vs. Nikon D90

Still trying to decide which camera to get. Have narrowed down to these two. While the Nikon has video capture (non-auto focus), the Canon has more megapixels and no video. Opinions?

Personally I would go with the Canon. But I am biased since I use Canon myself

Seriously though, this question has been askeda few times and the advice seems to go as follows...

Do you have any friends with Nikon/Canon from whom you might borrow or share accessories? Do you have any existing camera gear that would be more compatible with one than the other?

It seems that most cameras from Nikon and Canon are comparable so a lot comes down to how you like the feel of them and the few features that vary, the D90 introduces live preview on the screen and video recording, if either are important to you that might lean you towards Nikon. Equally it seems from what I have gathered that Canon is a little friendlier on the wallet in some respects, I get the feeling their RAW format is more widely accepted at times and the Canon flashes take external power as an option which can save you a packet on batteries.

Have you looked at both in a store? See how they feel and how accessible the features you are most likely to use are when shooting. Also consider what your first lens will be and if one kit is more appropriate than another.

There are far more experienced photographers than me who I'm sure will advise but they'll probably want some answers first to the questions above and how/when/where you plan to use the camera.

both cameras are extremely capable...UKChris has given you some very good advice...I would also consider what glass you are going to be able to afford with each body and look at images (easily found with a search engine) from both and make my decision from that...I don't think you can go wrong with either format...btw the 50d has liveview as well....

I have one friend with a Canon 40D, may or may not be able to share equiptment. I don't have ANY existing camera gear. I have looked at both in a store and really have no preference since this is my first DSLR and will have to get comfortable with it anyway. I do want to buy a good quality camera because I intend on keeping it for a few years without needing to upgrade. I will be shooting in this order, cars, landscapes, my sons' sports , and vacation pic's. The first lens I intend to get for all around is a 18-200mm. BTW, thanks for the info!

18-200 is a VERY versatile lens, then again, it is about $700 bucks if not more. The Canon may have more megapixels, but that doesn't always mean it's better quality (image wise I mean)
I've owned a Nikon D40X, D200, Sony A100 and Canon 40D. So I am not necessarily "biased" towards one another. The Nikon was very friendly to use, and the colors were rather vivid. Though I was pretty impressed with the 40D all-around. I didn't favor the 40D's ergonomics though.
The Nikon did feel more comfortable in the hand. But that's all just my personal opinion of course.
Plus, the Nikon's Live Preview and Video capture is pretty nice. Not that you would buy a dSLR to capture video but it's nice that it's there just for whatever.
As far as gear, I always see more Canon stuff for sale than Nikon. One other thing to consider, is that Canon Research and Develops their own stuff entirely.

If I didn't have an 18-200mm VR already I'd be seriously tempted to get the 18-55mm kit lens and add the 55-200mm VR (or 70-300mm VR) and save the extra cash. Changing lenses isn't much of a pain and you could then add in some other options like a flash with the money you save.

I picked up a 50D a couple weeks ago. I HIGHLY recommend it.

I will have to write up a quick review soon when I get some time.

As said...

Go pick them up and feel them, play with them and see which fits better.

Friends or people you can borrow from?

Neither is going to really beat the other one. Know you are buying into a system and you will be living with it over the course of time(unless you switch). It is a big purchase so do your research and make the right choice.

Unless I am mistaken, Costco carries the D90. Their return policy kicks ass. You could do what I did with the D40X and buy from them and have 3 months to play around with it. Full refund and everything within 3 months. Best way to really see if it is the right camera for you or not.

Well...I don't really want to start a war, but here goes...

On the Canon vs Nikon....I say get what system feels better in your hand, blah blah blah.

On the 50D vs D90, I would recommend the 50D. The new Digic4 and the new sensor technology make it a hell of a camera (up the level of the 1DMKII).

The difference in price is what gets me. For instance, I can buy the 50D w/18-200mm lens kit for $1650. Or, i can buy the D90 w/18-105 AND 70-300 kit, Ape bag, Bogen tripod, and 8g mem card for $1750. Help me!

Just went back to the store and held both cameras. What a HUGE difference in feel between the two. Canon feels way more solid than the Nikon. I don't want to step up to the D300, so I guess I'll be getting the 50D. Thanks!
