Stay with Nikon. The D5000 is essentially like the D90 except that it has the swivel out LCD screen. Really useful if you do a lot of "high or low perspective" shots. There are more but that's the major differences that I know of.

i just found out on another forum that one of the biggest differences is the d5000 needs to use the AF-S lenses (built in motor) where the d90 has it's own auto focus motor. which is nice so i can use the older lenses.

^^^That would also be huge too! I'd pick the D90 based on that information alone!

The D90 also has a top mount display that the D5000 does not, and as crazy as this is going to sound, I like the top mount display.

Yeah one major reason to spring for the D90 is for the built-in autofocus. This allows you to be able to use sooo many more lenses including many older ones which could save you a lot of money. AF-S lenses are expensive and harder to find used.

I also forgot to add if price matters you can go for the D80 (which is what I use) which was replaced by the D90. They also have a built-in autofocus motor. The D90 is fairly new so there should be a few D80 out there that are still brand new. Goodluck

i prefer the D90 to the D5000, internal focal motors and i prefer the feel of it in my hand over the d5000. also i don't use live view so what good does the flippy screen do me

If the D5000 is the size and weight or a D40/60 then maybe the D5000 would be a serious contender, but right now the D90 is miles better and just a tad bigger and heavier than the D5000.

Also, there is no substitute for the high-res 3.0 LCD on the D90.

+1

i don't think anyone thats used a top mount display could ever do without it.

also the lack of an internal focusing system on the D5000 really puts it in a lower league compared to the D90

D90 = serious about photography and taking good pics

D5000 = want to mess around and take good pics

I read the d5000 doesn't have focusing like the camera doesn't offer it so better get the d90 instead..

Buy the D90! It's a great camera and feels more stable. Also look for a used D300 body. You can find them for decent prices.

I just picked up the D90 with the 18-105mm VR lens. I compared it with the D5000 at the store earlier today and there's just simply NO contest between the two. If you can spring the extra cost, go for the D90 without question.
